Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

Queensborough Community College offers a unique opportunity for research involving undergraduates in a community college setting and was the first NSF sponsored REU physics site at a community college. Among the active areas of research are astronomy, biophysics, imaging, and physics education. The Physics Department co-sponsors the A.S. in Engineering Science and the A.S. in Liberal Arts and Sciences (Mathematics and Science). For more information see www.qcc.cuny.edu/Physics

Teaches courses in physics at all levels up to and including modern physics and introductory astronomy. Mentors and advises students; works with the department in the evaluation, implementation, and assessment of courses and pedagogy. Participates in Departmental and College activities including committees, curriculum development, and preparation of grants.

Continued scholarly activities and publications are required for tenure and promotion. Successful candidate may be required to teach some night and possibly Saturday classes.

QUALIFICATIONS
For Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

For Instructor:
Master's degree in area(s) of expertise, and/or active progress toward a Doctorate, or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Instructors must complete the doctorate within five years.

For Both:
Teaching experience, preferably at the college level, and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations. Ability to establish a research program with student participation.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • At least one year college-level teaching experience
  • Experience with program and course development and evaluation
  • Ability to involve undergraduate students in research

This position is responsible for providing instruction in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the College.  
Adhere to approved course syllabi. Provide students with the course syllabus that informs them of course requirements including specific objectives, means of attaining those objectives and methods of evaluation by the end of the first week of classes.

Use teaching methods which are appropriate to reach students of varying educational experiential backgrounds and learning styles. Allow the student to continually assess his/her own progress. Allow reasonable opportunity for each student to master the objectives of the course.

Develop and revise curriculum and instructional materials. Submit syllabi and/or addendums to the Division Office by the end of the first week of class. Assist in the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials.

Post and maintain office hours as per institutional guidelines. Serve as academic advisor and provide appropriate leadership and supervision in student activities. Make provisions for students to evaluate instruction and arrange for submission of evaluation to the designated office.

Participate in all areas of divisional and departmental responsibility such as proposing programs, projects and exhibiting leadership in their implementation; participate on committee in a effective, timely manner; work with other faculty to accomplish the goals of the discipline, division and College; attend all scheduled discipline and division activities held during the academic year unless they conflict with a regularly scheduled teaching assignment or activity approved by the Dean/Director/AVP.

Assist in the evaluation and selection of faculty, laboratory assistants and other discipline/program staff. Contribute to the governance of the College through active service on committees; participate in faculty orientation sessions, professional development seminars and activities to enhance professional development; accept the responsibility for professional awareness and growth.

Acknowledge and support the community college's mission to serve the community.

Perform all other duties appropriate to this position as assigned or directed.

Assist in the planning and implementation of on-going activities crucial to the discipline/program, such as registration, building and managing the class schedule, faculty, assignments, student recruitment, selection of off-campus instructional/clinical sites, accreditation preparation, needs assessments, advisory committee activities, budgets and other related instructional matters.  
1. Master's Degree in Physics or Master's degree with eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Physics.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position will have primary responsibility for developing and maintaining a state-of-the-art program in physics for the department, and will include development, implementation and articulation of curriculum, hiring part-time instructors, and developing and executing grants. It is expected that this position will support and help to grow the department in this area. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT:
1) Teach lecture and laboratory classes in physics for engineering majors, science majors and general education courses in physics and physical science.
2) Develop curricula and innovative teaching materials for physics courses at all levels.
3) Work with physics students to further development of study skills in science classes.
4) Participate in Department of Science & Engineering planning and decision-making including preparation and implementation of operational, planning, growth and budgetary strategies.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Compton Community College District is seeking an innovative individual whose focus is student learning for a full-time, tenure-track position in Astronomy and Physics for the El Camino College Compton Center. Course assignments meet general education requirements in science and include lower division courses in the Solar System, Stars and Galaxies, astronomy laboratory and array of physics courses from descriptive to calculus-based physics. Initial assignment will be in astronomy and descriptive physics.
