An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Displays Curator to join the team at the new SEA LIFE Centre in Birmingham.

SEA LIFE Birmingham takes each and every one of its visitors on a fascinating tour of freshwater and marine life. Seeing the magic of the deep up close with breathtaking displays among the fish, sharks, jelly fish and seahorses, there's so much more to SEA LIFE; We educate the next generation and we play a huge part in the conservation of some of nature's most beautiful creations.

About the role

In this role you will take responsibility for ensuring the continual development and innovation within the displays areas, leading the delivery of consistently high standards of animal husbandry and displays through the management, organisation and continued development of the team. Being an expert in your field, you’ll be able to deliver innovation creatures, concepts and systems through trials, research and working with the displays team to generate ideas as well as managing the creation/installation of new features that are key to creating compelling reasons to visit.

About you

You’ll be a dynamic, confident and a self motivated individual; a strong communicator who will be able to lead, develop and support the displays team aiming for a centre of excellence in marine management, conservation, preservation and education. Gained through significant experience working as a Display head in the aquarium industry, you will have a robust knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry, life support systems operation and maintenance, animal behaviour and acquisition of animals with the practical ability to create spectacular displays that deliver a highly immersive experience to all our visitors.  You’ll also have a good understanding of zoo licensing having been through a zoo licence in a previous role, project management experience and ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent.

General Manager/Curator

Blue Reef Aquarium is a leading visitor attraction based in Newquay and is now recruiting for a General Manager/Curator. 

Forming part of the Senior Management Team you will report to the UK Director.  To meet the business needs we are looking for an experienced Curator with General Management skills.  The successful candidate will play a key role in the day to day running of the Zoological Department   as well as in the strategic development, business success and daily operation of the attraction.  

For this role we require someone who can combine their Curator experience with General Management knowledge and experience.  You must be an excellent all round communicator, able to build and capitalise on a wide network of contacts externally, while motivating and managing teams internally.  This position would suit a candidate with an entrepreneurial outlook and excellent management skills. 

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the crucial role of marketing and ability to develop and employ creative selling techniques.  Attention to detail is also essential as well as financial literacy with proven ability to produce/manage budgets and business plans effectively. 

Having an entrepreneurial outlook you will have the skills to grow existing revenue streams as well as growing new revenue streams, whilst focusing on the bottom line with the ability to maximise quality and profitability of business.

This is a full time post which involves working 5 days a week and often includes working weekends and Bank Holidays.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an
international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding
programmes, research and education.


We are currently recruiting for a Team Manager to lead and develop the
Aquarium section. The post will involve the daily management of the
Aquarium section along with mentoring, training and developing the team.

Applicants should have proven experience of working in an aquarium
collection and exceptional knowledge of freshwater/marine fish, displays and
Aquatics.


Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related
science (min HND) or alternatively significant experience. Experience on insitu
and ex-situ conservation or research is desirable.


The successful candidate will have considerable leadership qualities,
experience of managing a team and be able to organise and prioritise tasks in
a dynamic environment. This role will involve managing the team budget.

A good understanding of risk assessments and COSHH are essential to
ensure all staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures. This
role will involve representing the Aquarium team at internal and external
meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas. Therefore,
excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. The ability to
build strong working relationships is essential to this role.


Applicants should have a full driving licence and be prepared to work
weekends and Bank Holidays in a roster system.


Salary is £29,182 per annum for a 40 hour week.

ASSISTANT TEAM MANAGER - AQUARIUM



ASSISTANT TEAM MANAGER
AQUARIUM
Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for an Assistant Team Manager to join our busy Aquarium section. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside keepers to undertake daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. They will be expected to have a degree in a relevant biological science (or have accrued an equivalent knowledge base) and understand how scientific method can be used to contribute to both ex situ & in situ conservation. They must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the biology and husbandry of marine & freshwater fish and of aquatic invertebrate and have proven track record in both conservation breeding and exhibitory. Excellent exhibit theming skills are a requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal health and welfare.

Candidates must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and should have some management experience as they will be assisting the team manager in all aspects of running the department. They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ARKs is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable.

Salary is £22,400 per annum pending 2012 pay award.
