Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Displays Curator to join the team at the new SEA LIFE Centre in Birmingham.

SEA LIFE Birmingham takes each and every one of its visitors on a fascinating tour of freshwater and marine life. Seeing the magic of the deep up close with breathtaking displays among the fish, sharks, jelly fish and seahorses, there's so much more to SEA LIFE; We educate the next generation and we play a huge part in the conservation of some of nature's most beautiful creations.

About the role

In this role you will take responsibility for ensuring the continual development and innovation within the displays areas, leading the delivery of consistently high standards of animal husbandry and displays through the management, organisation and continued development of the team. Being an expert in your field, you’ll be able to deliver innovation creatures, concepts and systems through trials, research and working with the displays team to generate ideas as well as managing the creation/installation of new features that are key to creating compelling reasons to visit.

About you

You’ll be a dynamic, confident and a self motivated individual; a strong communicator who will be able to lead, develop and support the displays team aiming for a centre of excellence in marine management, conservation, preservation and education. Gained through significant experience working as a Display head in the aquarium industry, you will have a robust knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry, life support systems operation and maintenance, animal behaviour and acquisition of animals with the practical ability to create spectacular displays that deliver a highly immersive experience to all our visitors.  You’ll also have a good understanding of zoo licensing having been through a zoo licence in a previous role, project management experience and ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent.

AQUARIST/MARINE MAMMAL KEEPER
PERMANENT VACANCY – DISCOVERY TRAIL 


About the role:
The successful candidate will work under the leadership of our Discovery Trail Head Keeper, providing the best possible care and management for our diverse collection of animals.  The main responsibility for this role will be working within our aquarium, but will also be required to work with Marine mammals and Penguins including the presentation of shows and talks.


Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole and Animal Keepers may also be required to provide cover, across a range of species including: Invertebrates, Reptiles, Nocturnal mammals and lemurs.


It's important that all visitors have an enjoyable day out and guest experience is paramount to our mission. You will be responsible for conversing with visitors whilst carrying out your daily duties around the park. It's essential therefore that you are just as confident working behind the scenes as well as Front of House.


Key Accountabilities:
Provide the highest level of husbandry according to the needs and requirements of the animals in your care.


Ensure a positive impression of yourself and the company is presented to all customers (internal and external) at all times to reflect the quality of the organisation.


The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual with previous experience working within a zoological collection. Excellent customer service, communication and animal husbandry skills are essential and experience as an aquarist is preferable.


Applicants must hold a qualification in Zoo animal management or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.


About you:
Ideally, you will have completed the DMZAA qualification (or equivalent) or have relevant qualifications. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills have an understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and animal training using operant conditioning methods.


Candidates are expected to be computer literate with a reasonable understanding of Microsoft Word and Animal record keeping systems.


The position is permanent and based at West Midland Safari Park, Bewdley, Worcestershire, working 5 days a week including weekends, bank holidays and some evenings during special park events.  We do have sites at 2 other locations in the UK, so travel may be required to these sites on occasion.  Therefore, a full, valid driving license is essential to the role.

Bristol Aquarium seeks Aquarist 

Bristol Aquarium has an exciting opportunity for a pro-active individual to join us as an Aquarist.

In the heart of Bristol located on the Harbourside, our Aquarium hosts our largest display of native species themed around a sunken ship.  Other displays include an amazing underwater walkthrough tunnel which includes exotic species.  Bristol Aquarium also has a large botanical house home to an array of plant species as well as Coral Sea display which is home to a number of species of sharks and tropical fish. 

The responsibility of the Aquarist will be varied, challenging, but extremely rewarding.  A hands-on approach is required to ensure you achieve the highest standard of animal care and husbandry.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing displays and exhibits, including our Botanical House Gardens, along with promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation of biodiversity.

In addition to this you will also maintain clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms; tool rooms, laboratories and quarantine facilities. 

The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks and design and run education sessions.

This is full time post working on a rotation basis which includes regular weekends and bank holidays.

Aquarist




Seeks an Aquarist

Blue Reef Aquarium, Portsmouth is looking to recruit anAquarist.

The aquarium is part of Deep Sea Leisure plc which has 6 other aquarium visitor attractions in the group. Our displays include animals from the British coastline to tropical reefs. At the heart of the aquarium is a tropical tunnel tank; as well as a diverse collection of invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians.

Reporting to the Displays Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for the husbandry of all displays and maintenance of life support systems. The successful candidate must possess a degree in Marine Biology or similar subject. A proven track record in fish and coral husbandry is desirable.  A proven ability to design, construct and maintain aquaria is a must and familiarity with PVC pipework, basic joinery and maintenance of life support equipment including pumps is a must. Other responsibilities will include providing veterinary care, display development and breeding programmes as directed.

It's important that all visitors have an enjoyable day out and this is where you play a part. You will be responsible for conversing with visitors whilst carrying out your daily duties around the aquarium as well as delivering engaging presentations. It's essential therefore that you enjoy and are just as confident working behind the scenes as well as Front of House.

This is a full time permanent post which involvesa rota pattern and often includes working weekends and Bank Holidays.

Responsible for assisting the Curator, Assistant Curator, Senior Supervisor, and Supervisors in the acquisition, quarantine and daily care of a living collection of aquatic and terrestrial organisms at The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, and the conduct of internal and external research and monitoring activities.
nature & Scope
The job holder will be responsible for the daily care of all the animals within the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo
dimensions
Undertake general and specialized husbandry and curatorial duties to ensure optimal care of Aquarium and Underwater Zoo animals.
principal accountabilities
· Assists the Curator, Assistant Curator, Senior Supervisor, and Supervisors in maintaining the highest level of quality as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image
· Follow established written standards and protocols (SOP’s) for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for water quality, operational efficiency, cleanliness and animal health
· Daily activities related to cleaning, maintenance, feeding and other husbandry activities required on a day-to-day basis, including routine checking of all aquarium exhibits and LSS areas.
· Provide feedback to superiors on improvements to animal care, LSS, exhibits and activities/protocols.
· Report issues and assist in the development of actions to rectify any faulty equipment or problems, in particular identify animal health or water quality problems and report to supervisor, medical and water quality staff and assist to develop a plan of action to handle the care and treatment of affected animals.
· Maintain all curatorial areas so they are safe and clean.
· Assists the Supervisor in maintaining an inventory of supplies, equipment and animal food items necessary for the daily care of the collection
· Work as a team with Guest Services and Front of House to provide a quality experience for guests and a safe and comfortable work environment for staff through continuous maintenance and improvement of visitor and behind-the-scenes spaces, including assisting Front of House with tour-guiding duties when necessary in and around the aquarium facility
· Deliver extraordinary customer service to all aquarium guests and other customers
· Assist in on-going aquarium research projects, both internally and externally
· Diving as required on a day to day basis, including maintenance diving, performance diving and shark/fish feeds, following company diving safety protocols and procedures and performing tasks to schedule and to an appropriate quality.
· Maintaining documentation and databases for diving, livestock (animal health and behaviour, acquisitions and mortalities), water quality, etc, where asked.
Qualifications & Experience (Competencies Required)
· A higher school degree in Biology, preferably Marine Biology or Oceanography or equivalent work experience
· Experience in maintaining an aquarium
· Open Water SCUBA certification from a recognized training agency.
· Computer skills an advantage
· Current Dubai driver’s license an advantage
· Any experience Birds or Reptiles is an advantage

Entry Level Aquarist

 
 
Entry Level Aquarist Position: 14.00/hr.

 The Caesars Palace Aquatics Dept. in Las Vegas, NV is looking for a motivated, organized, enthusiastic and hard-working aquarist that can provide strict attention to detail and exhibit an innate love for the field of animal biology.

 Our department maintains 33 small fresh and saltwater exhibits, quarantine and live seafood tanks throughout the property; (Not to be confused with the Forum Shops Atlantis Aquarium) with our largest system being 1800 gallons.

... Eligible Candidates should:

 -Possess knowledge of fresh and saltwater fish and invertebrates.
-Possess a degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field OR possess equivalent experience.
-Be familiar with PVC plumbing and comfortable around live support systems.
-Be able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs.
-Be able to climb ladders, work in occasionally smoky, humid or slippery work areas and walk long distances throughout the day.
-Be open water SCUBA certified or be able to obtain certification within 3 months.
-Exhibit troubleshooting skills.
-Possess exceptional observational skills.
-Be very personable and able to work with many different types of people.
-Be able to work independently as well as on a team.

 Duties of the Aquarist Include:

 Daily diet preparation, keeping of logs, plumbing and retrofit of life support systems, routine maintenance of aquariums, carrying out weekly chemistry testing, identifying and diagnosing illnesses, administering medications, performing necropsies, observation of animal behavior and diving among many others.
