Based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire

A vacancy has arisen for a senior elephant keeper at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. This is an exciting opportunity to join our innovative and dynamic elephant team in the management of our breeding herd of Asian elephants. Primarily free contact the Elephants are given daily walks around our 600 acre site as well as providing public education demonstrations.  ZSL has and continues to contribute to research and AI projects.

If you are currently an Elephant Keeper and would like to join ZSL’s world class Elephant team and you match the following requirements:

  • A proven track record of working with Elephants and familiar with all aspects of elephant management.  
  • Have attained the DMZAA in the Management of Zoo Animals or equivalent, or be prepared to undertake the 3 year Animal Management Course.
  • Have good communication skills, enthusiasm and an outgoing and friendly personality in order to communicate with visitors on a one-to-one basis and in front of a large audience. 
  • Be flexible both in approach to work and working hours.
  • Be totally reliable, and be able to work effectively within a well disciplined team
  • Have a full driving licence

Learning Manager - based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL is recruiting for a Learning Manager within its Discovery and Learning department at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

ZSL is an international conservation, scientific and education charity.  The ZSL Learning Manager will contribute to the achievement of ZSL’s Discovery and Learning mission “to provide positive learning experiences associated with the natural world that inspire lifelong learning in, support for animals, their habitats and conservation” ZSL’s Discovery and Learning strategy covers formal learning provision, CEPA (Communication, Education and Public Awareness) in ZSL’s conservation programmes, arts and culture, evaluation and visitor studies.

The Learning Manager’s main remit will be managing the Discovery and Learning provision at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. This includes both managing and some delivery of the schools programme, self-guided and practical programmes such as ZSL Zoo Academy. The postholder is required to communicate and collaborate closely with the Discovery and Learning team at ZSL London Zoo.

The Learning Manager will oversee budget details and ensure that ZSL school attendance and financial targets are met. They will manage standards and evaluation of the sessions and ensure that the mission goals of ZSL are achieved. The post holder will contribute to the development of the wider D&L strategy and will be required to input into ZSL’s arts and culture programme, evaluation, visitor studies and ZSL’s CEPA work as required.

Discovery and Learning Officer

We are looking to recruit a Discovery and Learning Officer initially for a one year contract, this post has 2 days guaranteed per week. However in line with business needs, this could rise to 5 days per week during our busy seasonal periods. The post is located within the Discovery and Learning department at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, but will also link to, and work at the Discovery and Learning department at ZSL London Zoo

The Discovery and Learning (D&L) Officer will play a key role in delivering ZSL’s learning strategy and in doing so achieve the Society’s mission to raise awareness and inform visitors and other audiences about animals, their habitats and associated conservation issues. The D&L Officer will achieve this through the development and delivery of a range of learning programmes and events, for a variety of audiences, the principal ones being schools, but also includes FE, HE, adult learners, teachers and education professionals. There will be additional project work which will link into all aspects of the D&L strategy including carrying out evaluation and visitor studies, assisting to develop ZSL Arts and Culture programmes and actively contributing to ZSL’s CEPA (Communication, Education and Public awareness) projects, which link to ZSL Conservation Programmes

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience working with children of a variety of ages and abilities
  • Proven experience delivering learning programmes in either a formal or informal environment
  • Recognised excellence in presenting public talks/shows/events to a range of different audiences
  • Experience of delivering practical programmes in an outdoor environment
  • Demonstrable knowledge of working in a zoo or animal related environment
  • Acknowledged excellence in communicating conservation and environmental messages to a wide range of audiences
  • Experience of conducting conservation field work (either biological or social research)
  • Knowledgeable of the work of ZSL, BIAZA, EAZA and the wider zoo community
  • Recognised experience in learning new skills and information within a strict time limit e.g. performance skills, handling different animals, working with different colleagues and departments
  • Documented ability in producing creative, innovative and dynamic ideas and outputs for a range of difference scenarios and projects.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is currently looking for a trainer/presenter for its dynamic and high-profile, natural behaviour displays.  Working with a diverse range of species, ranging from Eagles, Owls, Buzzards and Falcons to Macaws, Amazons and toucan; the successful applicant will work with all aspects of the care, enrichment, training and presentation of the animals used in the displays.  
 
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of flying and training a range of birds of prey, experience of working with trained non-domestic animals, and an appropriate animal management qualification eg ANCMZA or DMZAA.   Good communication skills, enthusiasm and self- motivation are essential.  Preference will be given to those with experience of speaking in public.  You must be presentable in appearance, flexible in your approach, totally reliable, and be able to work effectively both within a team and on your own when the need arises.  You will also need a full driving licence.

Part-time Keeper host needed
We are looking to recruit an experienced keeper to host this popular experience. We are interested in hearing from experienced keepers looking for 1 or 2 days per week. Applicants should be available to start work from mid March.
 
As a host you will need to welcome and engage with guests, and create a safe, relaxed and enjoyable environment. As a Keeper host you will be responsible for co-ordinating and overseeing any activities involving behind the scenes / animals.
 
You will have:            
 
·         Proven relevant experience as a Qualified/Senior Keeper or equivalent, a degree in a relevant biological subject, the City of Guilds Diploma in Zoo Animal Management or equivalent
·         Ability to work as a member of a team and go that extra mile

At ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, we receive hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, many of whom are families, children and school groups. We are looking for Presenters to enthrall, engage and interact with our key audiences through our fantastic range of daily live events and through hosting the popular new Lookout Lodge camping experience.



We are passionate about our animals and you will have a talent for inspiring that same passion in our visitors. You will use your advanced communications skills to engage visitors in one-to-one discussions, lead groups in interactive workshops and tours, or perform to large audiences of all ages.



We understand that our visitors can be as varied as the amazing animals we have at ZSL and our Presenters are just as confident interacting with our youngest first time visitors as with our lifetime supporters. Your days will be spent helping visitors get the most out of our exhibits, by leading and presenting a range of public events to inspire, entertain and educate our audiences about the varied work of the ZSL.



You will receive full support to learn new material and develop your presenting style. Experience of working with children is essential, ideally in an informal learning context. A full driving licence and first aid qualification are desirable.



Part time shifts available for either daytime or evening work. You must be available to start in March with contracts ending in late September or late October. Applicants will need to be flexible as weekend working is required.

PRACTICAL LEARNING OFFICER
Based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Discovery and Learning department are looking for a practical learning officer to join our team. It is a full time, fixed term post until 31 December 2013.

The practical learning officer will play a key role in delivering ZSL’s learning strategy and in doing so achieve the Society’s mission to raise awareness and inform visitors and other audiences about animals and their habitats and associated conservation issues

A major remit for this position is to plan and deliver six ZSL Zoo Academy courses during 2013. ZSL Zoo Academy is a practical course aimed at 15-17 year olds wishing to pursue a career with animals. You will support the students in practical work within the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo as well as teaching theory sessions about husbandry, welfare and aspects of conservation. You will also be responsible for planning and liaising with the animal department and ensuring safe working practice at all times. Additional practical programmes delivery for other audiences will be also required.

The role will also involve delivering some live interpretation events at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. You will assist the explainers in providing interpretation experiences throughout the day on a variety of topics within the zoo. Effective presentation skills are required to ensure these events achieve the educational and visitor enjoyment targets set by the ZSL. In addition, you will assist the education officers in the delivery of some formal learning sessions and activities to the wide range of audiences that attend ZSL Whipsnade Zoo as part of an education visit.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of teaching in either a formal or informal education setting.
  • Experience working in a zoo or animal related environment
  • Ability to carry out and demonstrate to others correct animal husbandry and management skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Experience working with children and communicating to a wide range of audiences
  • Previous experience of presenting public talks/shows/events
  • Ability to learning new skills and information within a strict time limit e.g. performance skills, handling different animals, working with different departments in the zoo
  • Available to work Saturdays
  • Able to work in an outdoor environment for large period of time, in all weather conditions.

Veterinary Officer: Zoological Society of London (ZSL), based primarily at Whipsnade Zoo
The Zoological Society of London is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, experienced zoo and wildlife veterinary surgeon (MRCVS) to join the Veterinary Department as one of its Veterinary Officers, on a 2-year Fixed Term Contract, responsible for the health and welfare of all animals in ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The position will be based primarily at Whipsnade.
As one of ZSL’s Veterinary Officers you will work between both sites in order to meet the needs of the Veterinary Department. Teaching of students, in particular of the veterinary graduates on the MSc in Wild Animal Health, will form a substantial part of your workload. In addition you will participate in the care and preventative medicine programmes, research and conservation activities, including support for ZSL’s conservation programme and native species reintroductions.
It is essential that you have a proven track record in zoological and wildlife medicine, with excellent communication and organisation skills, and a good publication, presentation and research project history is desirable. A post-graduate qualification in this field would be beneficial. Working knowledge of the statutory Health & Safety and animal health regulations is essential, with some management experience desirable. You must be a committed team player. Weekend and on-call duties for both collections are shared.
A strong interest in the veterinary management of the larger mammal species, being a committed proponent of animal welfare and having an enthusiasm for continuing professional development are also essential. A desire to work towards further qualification (e.g. RCVS or European College of Zoological Medicine diplomas) is anticipated.

Senior Elephant Keeper
Based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire



There is a vacancy for an experienced elephant keeper to join the dynamic and innovative team at a senior level at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. This position will provide the post-holder with the opportunity to develop their skills further and to take on the responsibility of managing Whipsnade’s herd on a daily basis.

A staff of 8 currently cares for a breeding herd of Asian elephants comprising one breeding bull, 5 cows and 3 calves, the youngest being born in 2012. The bull is managed in protected contact but the females and calves are managed in free contact which allows all of the elephants other than the adult male to be walked around the 600 acre zoo site with the keepers ever day. An important part of the programme is to present a demonstration for the visitors during the summer.

Plans are currently underway to build a new open indoor facility in 2014 to accommodate the growing herd and to provide an improved area for the cows and young. This will add to an already comprehensive facility with over 20 acres of grass paddocks, a bull paddock, an all weather sand-yard complex and indoor stables for the cows and young and the breeding bull.

The successful candidate will join an extremely active and committed team that works intensively with the elephants through the day under a well planned programme of husbandry, training, research and veterinary care ranging from daily washing, foot care, taking blood samples and weighing to artificial insemination and ultra-sound scanning.

We are looking for a keeper and manager who must be able to demonstrate the highest standards in the daily care of elephants; is highly motivated and committed to developing their skills further as part of a dynamic team. Applicants should be ambitious and able to assist with the on-going development of the elephant programme at Whipsnade.

This is an excellent opportunity to join ZSL and contribute to our work in wildlife conservation through our zoos and to be involved in one of the best elephant programmes available.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of bird husbandry and management including reproductive management and incubation techniques and be able to demonstrate a range of skills and knowledge in this field. In addition good communication skills and enthusiasm are essential. The ANCZAM qualification or similar is an advantage although those with appropriate experience and ability will also be considered.

Lookout Lodge

ZSL are launching a new overnight experience called Lookout Lodge. Guests can stay overnight in their own private lodge, and we will be running family-friendly and adult only nights. The night will be a fully hosted experience and includes tours, BBQ dinner, breakfast and much more. There will be a maximum of 32 guests per evening, and the host keeper will be supported by members of the Explainer team who will lead the talks. Lookout Lodge will be running 5-nights a week (Wednesday to Sunday), between April to October.

Keeper host needed

The rota could also include work on an animal section, and will include a combination of daytime, evening, overnight (accommodation provided) and weekend work to cover the experiences above. As the Keeper host you will be responsible for co-ordinating and overseeing any activities involving behind the scenes / animals. The Keeper host is supported by the Explainer team on the Lookout Lodge experience, who will lead on the majority of talks.


You will have:

  • Proven relevant experience as a Qualified/Senior Keeper or equivalent, a degree in a relevant biological subject, the City of Guilds Diploma in Zoo Animal Management or equivalent
  • ability to work as a member of a team and go that extra mile
  • Guest empathy
  • proven supervisory and interpersonal skills
  • clear and effective oral and written communication skills
  • good computer skills
It is essential that the Keeper is willing to become a trained first aider.

Based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire


ZSL Whipsnade Zoo seeks an experienced Bird Keeper to work with a variety of birds throughout the zoo

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of bird husbandry and management including reproductive management and incubation techniques and be able to demonstrate a range of skills and knowledge in this field. In addition good communication skills and enthusiasm are essential. The ANCZAM qualification or similar is an advantage although those with appropriate experience and ability will also be considered.

In return we offer an attractive package of remuneration including a salary range between £15000 - £22000 pa depending on experience.
