Discovery and Learning Officer



Discovery and Learning Officer - based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo
Fixed-Term Contract
£24,294 pa pro-rata

We are looking to recruit a Discovery and Learning Officer initially for a one year contract, this post has 2 days guaranteed per week. However in line with business needs, this could rise to 5 days per week during our busy seasonal periods. The post is located within the Discovery and Learning department at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, but will also link to, and work at the Discovery and Learning department at ZSL London Zoo

The Discovery and Learning (D&L) Officer will play a key role in delivering ZSL’s learning strategy and in doing so achieve the Society’s mission to raise awareness and inform visitors and other audiences about animals, their habitats and associated conservation issues. The D&L Officer will achieve this through the development and delivery of a range of learning programmes and events, for a variety of audiences, the principal ones being schools, but also includes FE, HE, adult learners, teachers and education professionals. There will be additional project work which will link into all aspects of the D&L strategy including carrying out evaluation and visitor studies, assisting to develop ZSL Arts and Culture programmes and actively contributing to ZSL’s CEPA (Communication, Education and Public awareness) projects, which link to ZSL Conservation Programmes

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience working with children of a variety of ages and abilities
  • Proven experience delivering learning programmes in either a formal or informal environment
  • Recognised excellence in presenting public talks/shows/events to a range of different audiences
  • Experience of delivering practical programmes in an outdoor environment
  • Demonstrable knowledge of working in a zoo or animal related environment
  • Acknowledged excellence in communicating conservation and environmental messages to a wide range of audiences
  • Experience of conducting conservation field work (either biological or social research)
  • Knowledgeable of the work of ZSL, BIAZA, EAZA and the wider zoo community
  • Recognised experience in learning new skills and information within a strict time limit e.g. performance skills, handling different animals, working with different colleagues and departments
  • Documented ability in producing creative, innovative and dynamic ideas and outputs for a range of difference scenarios and projects.

Wildlife Veterinary Advisor


Reporting To: Dr. Wayne McCallum (Footprints Organization, Director) and Bunthim Malivot (Park Manager).

Work band: Volunteer

Term: The initial term of this position will be for four months, but will be open to extension subject to mutual agreement and the availability of funds. 

Location: The position is based at Teuk Chhou, 15 minutes by vehicle from the town of Kampot, in southwest Cambodia. The volunteer is expected to spend the bulk of their time working at the Teuk Chhou Wildlife Education Park.

Working hours: 8:30 to 11:30 pm - 1:30 to 5:00 pm

Scope of Position: The Wildlife Veterinary Advisor position will be responsible for:

1.      Necessary mandatory protocols, such as vaccinations, worming procedures etc and attendance to any illnesses.

2.      Mentoring and support of a Khmer qualified veterinary graduate, so that they are eventually able to perform all veterinarian tasks at Teuk Chhou.

3.      Support the wildlife education park team with other activities as requested by either the Director or Park manager.

Experience: Experience in veterinarian care, including wild animal treatment in zoo situations. Confidence and knowledge in the provision of medicines and treatment of animals is a mandatory requirement.

Professional Qualifications: Qualifications in veterinarian science.

Other Skills: Experience in fund raising and educational interpretation is desirable.  

Personal: The successful applicant will need to be someone who can easily crossover between the Khmer and western worlds, while also being able to work as part of a team, to provide direction to his/her follow team members.

The applicant will also need to be someone who can talk with passion and commitment about the project, enthusing others with its vision and a desire to support it.  

Language Proficiency: English as a first language, or fluent written and spoken English as a second language. Ability to speak Khmer is highly desirable or an ability to learn. 

Remuneration: This is a volunteer position, however we would like to be able to offer support for daily living costs, therefore $200 per month will be provided.

Budgets: There is no dedicated budget associated with the position. The volunteer will be asked to develop budgets for all activities that he or she wishes to undertake. These will need to be approved by the Park Manager and Director before expenditure is possible.

Reporting: The Advisor will need to complete a monthly report on their activities. All expenditure will need to be summarized on to a spreadsheet and supported by receipts.

Other: The volunteer will be required to organize their own visa and to have medical insurance coverage over the terms of their volunteer period. Proof of both will be required before the position is commenced.

Trainee Keeper - Marwell Wildlife


Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources. Our 140 acre zoological park in the heart of Hampshire is home to over 170 exotic and charismatic species in beautiful landscaped surroundings.

We are currently looking to recruit a Trainee Keeper on a fixed term basis to work on a mixed species section. Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal welfare, health and animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, demonstrate common sense, display interest and commitment to animal welfare and conservation, and must possess strong verbal communication skills.
