EXPERIENCED ELEPHANT KEEPER



Kent based Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks are part of The Aspinall Foundation, a registered charity that is actively involved with several projects incorporating a diverse range of conservation activities and overseas projects in Central Africa, Indonesia and Madagascar. Our main spheres of conservation-based activity include captive breeding, education, ecosystem management, local community education projects, capacity building, habitat surveys and the rehabilitation of confiscated wild animals.

Howletts Wild Animal Park, situated near Canterbury in Kent, is home to the largest breeding herd of African Elephants in the UK with 21 births since 1982. We are currently recruiting for the full time role of Elephant Keeper to join our existing team of 5 staff.  The ideal candidate will have experience gained in a mainstream zoological collection, an awareness of current conservation issues and a passion for animal welfare with an open minded approach to elephant management.

This is a physically demanding position so candidates must be physically fit. A full valid driving licence is essential to the role. Ideally you will posses experience of driving farm machinery and basic maintenance skills. Holding a recognised Zoo Animal Management qualification, being comfortable giving talks to the public and having the confidence to represent the company in the media would be an advantage. 

Working 5 days a week, including weekends and bank holidays, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours. Additional employee benefits include either the provision of single accommodation or of a living out allowance and length of service rewards including membership of the company health plan and additional holiday entitlements.

Woburn Safari Park is currently looking to recruit a full time Animal Keeper to join the Elephant team. Woburn’s Elephant Herd consists of 1.3 Asian Elephants managed primarily in free contact.
Duties will include daily husbandry and management of the elephants including training, washing and exercising. The successful applicant will be required to work as part of a close knit team, demonstrating, good communication skills required for regular elephant presentations and special experiences. 
The ideal candidate would be required to have the following;
  • Experience of working elephants in free contact minimum of three years.
  • Able to supervise and develop work experience students.
  • Flexible approach to work and working hours.
  • Work well within a team.
  • Have attained or be willing to work towards the successful completion of the ANC in the Management of Zoo Animals or equivalent qualification.
  • Current full driving license would be advantageous.

Elephant Keeper Internship (unpaid)


We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic person who wants to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience, to work alongside keepers on the Elephant Section at Howletts Wild Animal Park and learn more about the conservation and care of one of the largest captive breeding herds of African Elephants in Europe.



Howletts Wild Animal Park, situated near Canterbury in Kent, works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, a charity committed to the conservation and reintroduction of captive bred species back into their natural habitats. The Aspinall Foundation manages a number of projects across the world including Congo, Gabon, Madagascar and Indonesia. In 2012 as part of our “Back to the Wild” campaign we will reintroduce a number of captive born Javan langurs and Javan gibbons to our reserve in Indonesia and return a family group of captive born Western lowland gorillas to our protected reserve in Gabon.



We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months or a maximum of 12 months and be willing and available to work from 8am to 5pm, 5 days per week. Some weekend work and bank holidays may be expected.



This is a physically demanding position so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation, wildlife and African elephants. This is an unpaid internship that would benefit someone already qualified or established in conservation or animal care who is excited by the prospect of having the opportunity to work with these amazing, intelligent creatures.



You will need a valid driving licence for the internship and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.

Elephant Keeper


ELEPHANT KEEPER

Knowsley Safari Park is the largest safari park in the UK, and at present we are under going redevelopment. As part of this development process the elephant programme is going through some exciting changes. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate that can assist in developing and delivering the elephant programme. The elephant section at Knowsley Safari Park manages a herd of 1.6 African elephants in a protected contact system.

The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of animal husbandry and a strong team mentality to achieve the team’s objectives. The candidate will have an open minded approach to different techniques of elephant management. They will have previous experience of working with elephants and a good understanding of elephants as a unit. Experience of positive reinforcement techniques for the purpose of training would be advantageous.

Sound knowledge of working within safe working protocols and risk assessments will be essential. A full UK driving licence is essential, and tractor and trailer driving experience would be beneficial. The successful candidate will have an Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals qualification (or equivalent).

This is a full time, permanent position (average 40 hour working week) which will include bank holidays and weekends on a rotated basis. The position comes with a salary of up to £18,720 depending upon suitability and experience as well as 23 days holidays each year plus 8 days in lieu of bank holidays and a generous pension scheme. Continuous professional development is encouraged and the company will provide the tools to accomplish this.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

 
We currently have a vacancy for an Elephant Keeper to be based on the Elephants of the Asian forest exhibit working within a close team using a protected contact management system.


The post will involve the daily care and management of our herd of 8 Asian elephants and their habitat.
The successful candidate will provide excellent animal husbandry, care and welfare, ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards for our visitors and the animals in our care as well as an enthusiastic and informed approach in representing elephants to the general public.
 

The successful candidate will have the Zoo Animal Management, HND or degree in a Zoological related science or equivalent experience. They will have proven experience working with large mammals, experience of working in a zoo or safari park, of Operant Conditioning and will have excellent observational skills with an eye for detail.
 
A full clean driving licence is also required.

The successful candidate will ideally be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages. They will desirably have proven experience with implementing environmental enrichment and experience of working within strict SWP.

Salary is £16,411 per annum for a 40 hour week.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is one of the most comprehensive collections of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in the management and conservation of endangered species.

 

We are going through an exciting period of change as this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help move the teams forward. The elephant section which manages our herd of 4 female Asian elephants very recently moved into a protected contact system.  This position is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry.

 

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual with an interest in zoo animal management. You must be committed to continued professional development and be a good team worker.  Some experience of working with elephants in a protected contact system and an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous. 

 

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform and 31 days holidays.
