Elephant Keeper Internship

Elephant Keeper Internship (unpaid)

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic person who wants to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience, to work alongside keepers on the Elephant Section at Howletts Wild Animal Park and learn more about the conservation and care of one of the largest captive breeding herds of African Elephants in Europe.

Howletts Wild Animal Park, situated near Canterbury in Kent, works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, a charity committed to the conservation and reintroduction of captive bred species back into their natural habitats. The Aspinall Foundation manages a number of projects across the world including Congo, Gabon, Madagascar and Indonesia. In 2012 as part of our “Back to the Wild” campaign we will reintroduce a number of captive born Javan langurs and Javan gibbons to our reserve in Indonesia and return a family group of captive born Western lowland gorillas to our protected reserve in Gabon.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months or a maximum of 12 months and be willing and available to work from 8am to 5pm, 5 days per week. Some weekend work and bank holidays may be expected.

This is a physically demanding position so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation, wildlife and African elephants. This is an unpaid internship that would benefit someone already qualified or established in conservation or animal care who is excited by the prospect of having the opportunity to work with these amazing, intelligent creatures.

You will need a valid driving licence for the internship and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.
