Experienced Animal Keeper - Large Carnivores

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is seeking an experienced, hardworking and dedicated keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and like-minded keepers. We have one of the leading collections of large carnivores in the UK including snow leopards, tigers, lions, cheetah, wild dogs, wolves and hyenas. The position will also include some reptile work.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake all duties on the section from cutting up/prepping meat, and cleaning, to enclosure building and maintenance. Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be plenty of opportunities for doing talks and displays to the public.

You must have significant experience in animal keeping at keeper level gained in a zoo park or equivalent environment and a full valid driving licence. We are looking for an individual who is hardworking, passionate and committed with knowledge of current conservation issues and experience in presenting talks to the public. You will also need a flexible approach to working hours, the confidence to represent the company in the media, a hands on approach to the restraint and handling of animals and the ability to run the section in the absence of the section manager and deputy.

Previous experience working with large carnivores is essential; please do not apply if you not have the relevant experience. reptile experience and a firearm licence is desirable as is experience gained in off road driving, experience of carcass collection and butchery. Ideally you will have obtained an animal management qualification or equivalent but if not you must be willing to work towards obtaining a relevant qualification. Working hours are: 40 hours a week worked five days out of seven.

EXPERIENCED KEEPER
Large Carnivores and Small Cats

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is home to one of the finest collections of carnivores and small cats in the world and is committed to their care and conservation.

We are looking to recruit a passionate, enthusiastic, energetic and experienced team player to be a keeper to join a small team of dedicated keepers to care for our carnivore and small cats section.

Ideally you will have a relevant qualification or be willing to work towards one. Previous experience of working within a mainstream animal collection or similar is essential.
The successful candidate will be sharing their time working across the two sections. Working times will be five days out of seven, 40 hours a week.

A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full valid driving licence. You will have the ability to talk to groups of visitors, have a hands on approach to the restraint and handling of animals, ideas for enclosure design and animal husbandry and a passion for conservation.

A flexible work attitude is essential for this role. Applicants must be confident with working at height and must be physically fit as this a physically demanding role.

The following criteria is advantageous but not essential:

• Experience of working with reptiles/amphibians and invertebrates as there is some work with these animals
• Firearms training and experience or willing to obtain
• Off-road driving experience
• Experience of carcass collection and butchery
• Experience in dealing with escape procedures
