Editorship at Science & Education

The International History, Philosophy and Science Teaching Group (IHPST) invites applications for the position of Editor of Science & Education, to begin January 1st, 2015.

Science & Education, owned and published by Springer, is the official journal of the International History, Philosophy and Science Teaching Group (IHPST). The journal publishes the results of research and perspectives about using historical, philosophical, and sociological approaches to improve teaching and learning in science and mathematics. In addition, the journal’s scope includes the role of such approaches in model curricula, teacher education, and educational philosophy and policy. Science & Education is distinctly interdisciplinary, and fosters fruitful discourse among scientists, mathematicians, historians, philosophers, cognitive psychologists, sociologists, science and mathematics educators, and school and college teachers. The journal currently publishes 10 regular issues per year, approximately 1350 pages.

IHPST is seeking an internationally respected scholar with a background featuring elements of both science education and history, philosophy, or sociology of science and who has prior editorial and/or managerial experience. The Editor serves for five years and receives compensation from Springer.

1. 6-Month Science Standards Editor:
We are seeking a motivated, self-directed standards aligner to be part of our alignment services team. This is a 6 month temporary position.


Experience and Skills:

This position requires solid knowledge of Science and undergraduate level Mathematics, with an ability to analyze State Science and Mathematics standards for K-12, following specific alignment specifications.  An excellent command of Science and Mathematics is required with knowledge of the educational pathway from K-12.  Science and Mathematics teaching experience and curriculum development experience at the K-12 levels is preferred.  Experience at the introductory Community College Mathematics and Science levels will be considered.  Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science content knowledge is preferred.  The ability to meet specified timelines and production goals is required. This position requires close attention to detail, the ability to closely follow established procedures, research online, create documents, train others, track progress on projects, and lead standards projects.

2. Science Editor:

We're looking for a talented editor with a solid K-12 science background and passion for developing science curriculum. As a science editor you will create and edit science content; develop and adhere to production and schedules and ensure quality of science content; confer with writers and editors regarding changes made to submitted content to ensure continuous improvement in the quality of the work; assist training or mentoring writers and editors (contract and employee) as needed; collaborate with team to understand project requirements and to meet target completion dates within specified budgets; understand and follow production schedules and procedures for multiple projects or products; and perform research on various topics as needed by project. Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science content knowledge is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Requires B.S. or M.S. in field of science; elementary through high school science teaching experience; content/curriculum development experience; ability to maintain production schedules.

Job duties

Responsible for growth of company's physics portfolio via acquisition as well as development of existing assets consistent with the company's reputation as a high quality, high level publisher. Involves extensive author and editor contact, journal management, book (and journal) proposal review, contract negotiation, preparation of manuscripts for production, promotional planning and monitoring of sales, budget and financial planning, long range planning for growth and development of the program and management of editorial support staff. Specific responsibilities include:

Strategic Planning

- Assesses trends and funding in Physics, evaluates strategies, strengths and weaknesses of competitors.
- Prepares long-term planning documents and strategic goals as requested.
- Maintains communication with US, European and Asian editorial counterparts about specific immediate questions as well as long term strategy questions.
- Reviews and discusses new projects and plans with editorial colleagues particularly in overlapping areas.

Editorial Acquisition

- Pursues an active and efficient acquisitions policy through correspondence, required meetings/trips, telephone, consultations with advisors, etc. Approximately 20% 50% travel as well as strong initiative and independent functioning.
- Prepares and executes publishing contracts.
- Maintains and develops a circle of reviewers and advisors and evaluates their judgments.

Project Development and Management

- Manages and develops a selection of physics journals.
- Supervises final editorial preparation of manuscripts for production.
- Discusses, assumes and proposes financial and budgetary plans for program.
- Develops guidelines, plans, reporting systems, etc., for publishing plans and projects.
- Monitors staffing requirements and trains and develops staff.
- Performs related duties as required.

Job requirements
College degree with advanced degree in the specific subject area required. Experience as an editor or related editorial/publishing experience and/or Ph.D in the field highly desirable. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required. Must be willing and able to travel.

Content Strategist at APS

Content Strategist

The American Physical Society, seeks a Content Strategist to join the IT department at the APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). The Content Strategist has broad responsibilities for both high-level strategy and hands-on editing of content for web and mobile experiences. This position is responsible for creating a strategy to communicate the right information to the right audiences by working with stakeholders to write, edit, and promote appealing, customer-focused content informed by an understanding of the user experience. An interest in physics or science is a plus.

Responsibilities
Ensure that content on the web site meets the needs of the target audiences in terms of substance, placement, presentation and timeliness.
Collect, edit, and manage content for aps.org website and other APS domains.
Maintain and administer website using content management system, hands-on HTML and CSS coding.
Enforce and develop content standards for consistent style, format, and user experience.
Identify content needs and gaps through regular web site auditing, following through to write or procure and post content on the web sites.
Manage web site editorial calendar for APS web sites.
Assist in the development of content templates and style guides that exhibit best practices and standards, including the use of appropriate web-writing styles.
Stay abreast of current industry best practices and techniques to ensure timely and effective web content.
Monitor and evaluate content effectiveness and consistently make recommendations for improvements using analytics, including SEO strategy.
Establish and maintain documentation of web site procedures, including CMS training materials and work flow procedures.
Support content contributors, including CMS training and approval of content changes.
Solicit graphics for use on web site and ensure proper permission for usage

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications-related field
Experience:
3-5 years professional content strategy experience, including information architecture and responsive content
Experience using content management systems
Functional understanding of website layout and web graphics
Experience working with associations and/or publishing environment preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expert knowledge of content strategy concepts and SEO
Knowledge of content management systems, metadata and information architecture
Strong written, verbal communication, and marketing skills
Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills
Highly organized and detail-oriented with good project management capabilities
Experience with PhotoShop and Dreamweaver preferred
Expert knowledge of HTML and CSS
Ability to coach staff in "writing for the web"
