The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is recruiting for the position of Director of the King Khalid Wildlife Research Centre (KKWRC) in Saudi Arabia. ZSL have been managing KKWRC for the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) since 1989. The centre runs the largest captive breeding programmes in the world for mountain gazelles, Arabian sand gazelles and Nubian ibex, and carries out ecological, epidemiological and genetic research on these captive animals and wild populations in protected areas across Saudi Arabia. KKWRC has carried out reintroductions into three protected areas in Saudi Arabia and continues to monitor these populations whilst planning future reintroductions.

ZSL is seeking a suitably qualified, motivated individual with strong leadership qualities. Candidates should have experience at Senior Departmental level and preferably experience working in the Arabian Peninsula. Able to work independently in demanding social conditions you will have an aptitude for motivating staff and fostering relationships with institutional partners. A good understanding of conservation, wildlife health or animal management is desirable. Fluent spoken and written English is essential and Arabic is of benefit.

As Director, you will be overall-in-charge of the centre, responsible through ZSL to the President of the Saudi Wildlife Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. You will be responsible for the management of KKWRC staff, finances and other resources to ensure the delivery of all management, scientific and capacity building targets in the SWA-ZSL annual contract and workplan.

The position is initially a fixed term contract with the possibility of renewal each year thereafter. The post will be based at KKWRC in Thumamah, 1 hour outside of Riyadh. Accommodation is provided at KKWRC. The salary range is £37,984-£48,020 (tax free) commensurate with experience, with 45 calendar days leave per annum.

Job Description

Job Title:

Department/section:
Conservation Programmes Department, West and North Africa conservation programme.

Reporting Structure:
The post holder will report directly to the West and North Africa Programme Manager.

Location:
The position will be based at KKWRC in Thumamah, 1 hour outside of Riyadh.

Duration:
The initial contract will be until the end of 2013 and renewable on an annual basis.

Salary:
£37,984-£48,020 (tax free) per annum commensurate with experience.

Benefits:

Overall purpose of job:
Overall-in-charge of KKWRC, responsible for the delivery of all management, scientific and capacity building targets in the SWA-ZSL annual contract and workplan.

Project Outline:
ZSL have been managing KKWRC for the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) since 1989. Main responsibilities:


Execution of the ZSL contracts and workplans in Saudi Arabia.

 Communication with the Saudi Wildlife Authority and ZSL.

 Direction and management of the Human and other Resources of KKWRC specifically provided for under the ZSL contract towards completion of the scientific, management and capacity building targets set out in the work plan and contract.

 Responsibility for management of the budget and oversight of the finances provided under the contract, and ensuring completion of financial reports, annual audits, and filing of tax returns.

 Preparation of annual workplans and budgets.

 Preparation of monthly accomplishments reports, quarterly summary reports and comprehensive annual report on all KKWRC activities and submission to SWA and ZSL.

 Overseeing all publications arising from scientific research at the KKWRC.

 Representing KKWRC at appropriate national and international Meetings.

 Carrying out other duties as required for the effective execution of the contract between the Zoological Society of London and the Saudi Wildlife Authority.


Other duties:


1. To undertake appropriate administrative tasks;

2. To comply with the relevant ZSL and KKWRC policies;

3. To maintain safe workplace practice and procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation, ZSL Health and Safety guidelines and any relevant Saudi Arabian legal requirements;

4. Any other duties commensurate with the post as agreed with line manager.

Qualification: M.Sc. or B.Sc in Veterinary Sciences / Wildlife Sciences / Zoology

  • Care and management of chicks from 8 days to 8 weeks of age.
  • Preparation and administration of all varieties of prescribed feed for chicks and juveniles
  • Assist in preventive and therapeutic programs conducted by veterinary department
  • Application of metal rings at 6-8 weeks of age
  • Enforce strict hygiene, sanitation and biosecurity measures in the rearing program
  • Conduct feeding trials and growth rate studies as directed by management
  • Maintenance of cages and replacement of litter material as and when necessary

  • Assist in all bird transfers as directed by the Management/ vet department
  • Monthly progress report on rearing program
  • Submitting orders for equipment and consumables

  • Maintain inventory of items
  • Responsible for overall management of juvenile rearing section (chicks from 8 days to 8 weeks).
  • Supervise maintenance of outdoor juvenile cages.
  • She/He will prepare work schedule for subordinate staff, ensure day-to-day reporting of activities
  • Enter data regarding birds under his ease.
  • Prepare a handbook of all rearing processes and protocols for future reference.
  • Develop strategy and action plan in association with Houbara captive-breeding incharge and Research Coordinator
  • Discuss and formulate plan in consultation with Captive-breeding incharge and reintroduction department

Job profile: We require experienced person (senior) who could take up the job with the following duties:
  • Manage the artificial incubation process
  • Monitoring health and execution of preventive and therapeutic veterinary treatment
  • Analyze clinical and non-clinical samples using microbiological techniques; proper dispatch of samples to higher labs for analysis and interpretation
  • Conducting experimental research to increase the data-base
  • Co-ordinate with various departments, participating in semen analysis, artificial insemination and genetic studies
  • Record keeping and compiling data and supervising record keeping
  • Training other staff in different aspects of captive-breeding, rearing and management
  • Biosecurity - Implementation and monitoring
  • Assist in statistical analysis of all data generated during the captive breeding program
  • Prepare a breeding chart for daily inseminations keeping genetics records of all birds to avoid related crosses
  • Analysis of semen quality and assess sperm concentration to prepare insemination doses
  • Maintain an organized chart of the breeding program with information on egg production, insemination, semen collection, and semen production
  • Ensure correct entry of breeding data into the 'Houbara software program' and always keep a hard copy for verification.
  • Train new vets, data entry and quarterly reporting.
  • Prepare a handbook of all lab procedures and protocols to analyze clinical and non-clinical samples, necropsies, water and feed analysis for future reference.
  • Develop strategy and action plan. Discuss and formulate plan in consultation with the reintroduction department and other colleagues.
