Manager of Zoo Horticulture



Manager of Zoo Horticulture

The Manager of Zoo Horticulture plans, manages, coordinates, implements, administers and evaluates a comprehensive system of horticultural maintenance at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Essential functions:

  • Manages greenhouse operations, landscape design and maintenance, habitat design and maintenance, and Zoo horticulture education/conservation programs
  • Provides leadership in evaluating and developing a full-time union staff of 9 complemented by seasonal employees and interns
  • Directs the coordination, design, establishment and maintenance of new and existing annual and perennial flower beds, turf areas, and indoor /outdoor ornamental tree, shrub and perennial plant collections
  • Oversees biological turf program, IPM program, browse program, plant accessioning, invasive plant protocol, and irrigation systems
  • Develops and leads public educational horticulture programs and events which demonstrate the inter-relationship between plants, animals and man
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Botany or related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience in Horticulture, Manicured and Botanical Landscape Architecture, Botany and/or related field
  • Minimum of three years of management experience
  • Overall knowledge: Agronomy, Floriculture, Landscape Horticulture, Forestry, Plant Taxonomy, Turf Management and Human Relations
  • Verifiable ability to lead personnel in a manner that builds teamwork and recognizes contributions of employees
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Licensed Public Applicator of pesticides
FULL SALARY RANGE: $50,000 - $74,000/Annually. Typical Hiring Salary: $50,000 - $62,000/Annually

HORTICULTURIST

Chester Zoo is one of the UK’s leading Zoological Gardens, with many horticultural features, gardens, and greenhouses in our 100 acre site. An exciting opportunity has arisen within the horticultural team, to assist in all aspects of the department’s work.

The successful candidate will develop and maintain a wide range of horticultural features and activities within the Animal and Plant Division and the wider zoo environment, in support of the zoo’s mission. They will use horticultural skills and knowledge to support the zoo’s mission in active conservation and by communicating that knowledge to other people e.g. the public, students and outside organisations when required.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of NVQ level 2 in Horticulture and proven practical experience. They will have the ability to operate a wide range of horticultural machinery and equipment efficiently and safely. They will have a wide range of horticultural skills and practices including; propagation, growing from seed to planting out, care and cultivation of plants and knowledge of soil types. They will have good communication skills. The successful candidate will have a full driving licence.

The successful candidate will ideally have a PA1 and PA6 spraying certificate. They will have an understanding of environmental and conservation issues. They will ideally have knowledge of lawn maintenance.

Salary is £14,171 rising to £15,745 after satisfactory completion of the 6 month probationary period.
