Job description: The award-winning Udzungwa Forest Project (UFP) is seeking a highly motivated individual to support its field team in the research, monitoring and conservation of threatened forests. The successful applicant will be expected to:

1. Facilitate the sound implementation of the UFP strategic plan for forest conservation, livelihood development and monitoring;

2. Provide technical input to the UFP adaptive management process;

3. Assist in the gathering of ecological and socio-economic data under an established forest conservation monitoring programme;

4. Advise and train project staff in the recording and storage of data to a high quality;

5. Summarise data in reports, bulletins and presentations for the UFP director, and for stakeholders including government officials, NGOs, industry partners and local communities;

6. Negotiate with land-owners and government for improved forest conservation;

7. Assist the UFP director in writing reports and research papers and in establishing a new charity;

8. Give presentations to project partners and international conferences;

9. Develop the English-language skills of senior project staff.

About the employer: UFP is a conservation project based in southern Tanzania, established and directed by Flamingo Land, which is home to the UK’s most visited zoo. The aim of the project is to better protect tropical forests through ecological monitoring, community education, capacity building and lobbying. UFP is based mostly in Magombera Forest, on the east of the breathtaking Udzungwa Mountains. The main emphasis of UFP is on the monitoring and management of indicators of forest conservation and the sustainability of human natural resource use. UFP’s all-Tanzanian team ensures that the project has a strong local connection, aiming to integrate fully with local communities and managers. Ultimately the goal is to develop sufficient in-country income generation and capacity among villages and management authorities, such that forest conservation can continue without external support. The project collaborates closely with four local villages, WWF Tanzania, the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group, Wild Things Safaris, the Udzungwa Ecological Monitoring Centre, and Illovo Sugar Company who provided funding for this position. UFP receives technical support from the Centre for the Integration of Research, Conservation and Learning (CIRCLE), a University of York facility based at Flamingo Land.

Key selection criteria

ESSENTIAL

- Bachelors degree or higher in a relevant discipline (e.g. biology, zoology, botany, conservation, environmental science, environmental management)

- Passionate about conservation of the natural world

- Native English speaker

- Proven ability to learn at least one foreign language

- Experience working or volunteering in a developing country, preferably in Tanzania or elsewhere in East Africa

- Experience of working in remote locations

- Awareness of health and safety considerations of working in remote locations

- Practical experience of ecological monitoring methods

- Competent in the use of field survey equipment (especially GPS, maps and compass)

- Knowledge of basic statistical methods

- Computing skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint and Word

- Excellent presentation skills

- Excellent inter-personal skills

- Flexible approach to work

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is recruiting for the position of Director of the King Khalid Wildlife Research Centre (KKWRC) in Saudi Arabia. ZSL have been managing KKWRC for the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) since 1989. The centre runs the largest captive breeding programmes in the world for mountain gazelles, Arabian sand gazelles and Nubian ibex, and carries out ecological, epidemiological and genetic research on these captive animals and wild populations in protected areas across Saudi Arabia. KKWRC has carried out reintroductions into three protected areas in Saudi Arabia and continues to monitor these populations whilst planning future reintroductions.

ZSL is seeking a suitably qualified, motivated individual with strong leadership qualities. Candidates should have experience at Senior Departmental level and preferably experience working in the Arabian Peninsula. Able to work independently in demanding social conditions you will have an aptitude for motivating staff and fostering relationships with institutional partners. A good understanding of conservation, wildlife health or animal management is desirable. Fluent spoken and written English is essential and Arabic is of benefit.

As Director, you will be overall-in-charge of the centre, responsible through ZSL to the President of the Saudi Wildlife Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. You will be responsible for the management of KKWRC staff, finances and other resources to ensure the delivery of all management, scientific and capacity building targets in the SWA-ZSL annual contract and workplan.

The position is initially a fixed term contract with the possibility of renewal each year thereafter. The post will be based at KKWRC in Thumamah, 1 hour outside of Riyadh. Accommodation is provided at KKWRC. The salary range is £37,984-£48,020 (tax free) commensurate with experience, with 45 calendar days leave per annum.

Overall purpose of job:

Project Outline:

 Preparation of annual workplans and budgets.

 Preparation of monthly accomplishments reports, quarterly summary reports and comprehensive annual report on all KKWRC activities and submission to SWA and ZSL.

 Overseeing all publications arising from scientific research at the KKWRC.

 Representing KKWRC at appropriate national and international Meetings.

 Carrying out other duties as required for the effective execution of the contract between the Zoological Society of London and the Saudi Wildlife Authority.


Other duties:


1. To undertake appropriate administrative tasks;

2. To comply with the relevant ZSL and KKWRC policies;

3. To maintain safe workplace practice and procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation, ZSL Health and Safety guidelines and any relevant Saudi Arabian legal requirements;

4. Any other duties commensurate with the post as agreed with line manager.

Intern Opportunity with BMCRif - We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic, hard-working person to assist the director and deputy director of BMCRif during a 3-month period between mid-April to mid-July. You will preferably be living in or close to Tetouan. This is a voluntary position but we can provide accommodation and subsistence whilst in the field. This would be a excellent opportunity to get hands-on experience in an established conservation project which uses innovative, cross-disciplinary research methods. There would also be an opportunity to attend the Foundation for Environmental Education Conference with the BMCRif team in Marrakech in June.

Job Description:

The Assistant to the Bird Curator is responsible for supporting the Curator of birds in all aspects of management of the Bird Department, including:

1. Aviary maintenance, planting and design.
2. Supervision of Bird Keepers’ daily routine and food preparation.
3. Management of reproductive activity, including bird socializations, artificial incubation and hand-rearing.
4. Supervision of the daily distribution of birds’ medications and routine disease monitoring, as well as assistance in veterinary treatments.
5. Record-keeping, data collection and data encoding.
6. Preparation of guidelines, protocols and working schedules for Bird Department personnel.
7. Administration and record-keeping of Bird Department human resources.
8. Management of food stocks and in-house insect production.

Applicants for the position must fulfill the following requirements:

1. At least 3 years experience in captive bird husbandry, preferably with passerines and/or psittacines.
2. A degree in zoology, ornithology or another related field is preferred.
3. Extensive knowledge of bird husbandry, nutrition, disease, ecology and behaviour.
4. Expertise in artificial incubation and hand-rearing techniques.
5. Experience with record-keeping and data collection.
6. Basic computer skills (Word, Excel and internet as a minimum, knowledge of ISIS would be an advantage).
7. High level capability in oral and written English.
8. Knowledge of Arabic is a bonus but not essential.
9. Flexibility in working hours and an ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

Working conditions:

• Initial contract is for 2 years; starting with a probationary period of 3 months.
• Work schedule is based on 6 days / 48 hours per week.
• Flexible working hours depending on the season.
• 1 month paid holiday per year excluding official holidays in Qatar.
• One paid return economy ticket to “home-airport” per year; Ticket at beginning and end of employment are also included.

The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL) is a primate sanctuary located in the South Kivu Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Centre was established in 2002 by the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Centre de Recherche en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN) and is now managed by a consortium of local and international organisations including the ICCN, CRSN, Coopera, Venner av Lwiro and Friends of Lwiro Australia.

The CRPL currently houses over fifty chimpanzees and seventy monkeys, representing more than ten different species, all victims of the illegal wildlife trade in the DRC. With established education and awareness programs, and as the only wildlife sanctuary in the region, the CRPL acts as a crucial resource for all conservation organisations working in the area.

The Centre is situated just outside the boundary of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega (PNKB), making it the ideal venue for great ape health, law enforcement and conservation programs and is included in the PNKB’s Operational Plan and also in the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) for the Kivu Landscape, indicating the Centre’s imperative role in conservation in the region. The CRPL is also a Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) member sanctuary.

Over the past few years the CRPL has been developing new facilities to remove the animals from the cages in which they previously lived and to house them in open plan enclosures, enhancing their quality of life and improving our rehabilitation methods. The next 5 years will be a dynamic time for the CRPL and we are seeking 2 persons to assist with this process of change.

These positions are of a voluntary nature, however assistance will be provided with basic costs. While the CRPL runs a volunteer program for paying volunteers, these positions will hold more responsibility.

The primary position we are searching for would be responsible for:

·

Grant writing and fundraising (this is the most important aspect of the job)

·

Donor/Sponsor relationships

·

Web communications and administration

·

Overseeing the volunteer program

·

Education programs, in particular the Roots and Shoots program

·

Overseeing the sanctuary

The second position would be responsible for:

·

Overseeing the new facilities in the sanctuary, animal integrations etc.

·

Overseeing construction programs

·

Organising basic maintenance

 

We are ideally seeking a couple, or 2 friends, for these positions as Lwiro can be a little isolated, however we will take applications from individuals for the primary position only. The primary position is the priority for the CRPL as we do not receive any government funding and rely on grants and donations for all our costs. As these positions are voluntary, you will be responsible for your own expenses – including but not limited to travel, visas, insurance etc. Housing and food will be provided by the CRPL. These positions are for 12 months (with a 3 month probation period), with the option to extend further. Assistance with visa costs can be negotiated after the 3 month probation period.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required

Fluency in written and spoken English – for the primary position.

Advanced computer skills; the ability to navigate the internet, produce documents to a high standard, maintain a

blog and other social media, use Microsoft Office programs to a high standard – for the primary position.

A position is available, starting as soon as possible, as the social officer for the Zoological Society of London (ZSL)’s Wildlife Wood Project in Cameroon. The Wildlife Wood Project engages the timber industry, Cameroonian government and local communities in sustainable wildlife conservation in the timber production forests of the Congo Basin. The project provides support to build stakeholder capacity for wildlife conservation, develop and implement monitoring and management tools on the ground and engage at the policy level to help create an environment supportive of the project’s long term vision.

The successful candidate will focus on three main areas: S/he will be responsible for leading on all project community engagement activities, including the successful development and implementation of joint antipoaching efforts between local communities and other stakeholders. They will also be responsible for

developing and implementing a long term strategy for engaging with stakeholders at the local and national level to change behaviour in favour of conservation through a social marketing programme. This will be done in close partnership with the London based discovery and learning team. The post holder will also lead on designing and implementing appropriate socio-economic studies to guide project activities and monitor and evaluate outcomes.

This is a 9 month position with the potential for extension. The post will be based in Yaoundé with regular trips to remote field sites in East Cameroon. Some travel within Central Africa may be required.

The post holder should have at least 2 years experience working with rural communities ideally in Africa, experience applying participatory techniques and a postgraduate qualification in social science, education or demonstrated research skills in these fields. Experience in CEPA, social marketing, conservation, community development and/or tropical forestry would be an advantage. The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in both spoken and written French and English.

A base salary of £23,701-£27,743 p.a., plus benefits including, annual return flight from Europe to Cameroon, visa, and insurance under ZSL’s group travel insurance policy will be provided. The position is to start as soon as possible.

The person: Needs practical experience of falconry and breeding birds of prey. Experience working with imprinted raptors or other birds is essential for the holder of this position. The job: During the spring and summer staff work extended hours to cover the breeding season so the holder of this position must demonstrate flexibility regarding work schedules.

Responsibilities include:
Aviculture team members contribute to routine aviculture activities within the department that includes:

Food preparation

Participation in the management and upkeep of avicultural facilities (involving substantial cleaning, some heavy maintenance work, repairs and building, vegetation management). This includes a small amount of farm work managing a small flock of sheep that are used to keep the vegetation in some parts of the aviculture facility and aviaries grazed.

Feeding of a group of breeding birds.

Management of breeding birds during the season.

Management of imprinted falcons for breeding during the season.

Participation in the incubation of falcon eggs.

Participation in the rearing of young falcons.

Participation in the preparation and shipping of falcons to clients in the UK and overseas

Some avicultural record keeping.

Some stock-keeping of avicultural equipment and supplies.

To contribute to the development and implementation of work plans to deliver IWC objectives.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the post holder is required to perform any other reasonable duties that may be assigned by the supervisor shown above, from time to time.

Aruma (4 1/2 year old male) and Tipnis (1 year old female) are Andean Bears, a disappearing species, also known commonly as the Spectacle Bear.
We need extremely reliable Volunteers who can dedicated at least 4 weeks (28 days) straight of their time to caring and enriching the lives of these Bears,.

Week 1 Volunteers responsibilities include:
-Moving through the regular rotating roster of La Senda Verde Volunteering Program to gain a good feel for the Refuge.
- Cleaning, caring, and feeding Birds, Wildcat, Monkeys, Turtles and various other animals.
- Documenting feeding and behavioral habits.

Week 2-4 Volunteer will be introduced to Full Time Bear Care.
Responsibilities include:

- Preparing Food and Feeding Bears.
- Cleaning Aruma's Enclosure and Tipnis Cage.
- Reporting each day to the on sight Veterinarians feeding and behavioral habits of the Bears.
- Working on enrichment projects to keep the Bears active mentally and physically.
- Checking the perimeter and electric fence of Aruma's cage daily.
- Helping to construct the New Bear Enclosure for Tipnis as she is growing out of her cage.
- Overall helping give these Bears a better life and the attention to detail they need.

PhilinCon´s rainforest conservation project PanayCon has lost its local project manager and is in urgent need of a new one. The project is operating

As the recent flood disaster on Mindanao with many dead and homeless people has shown, deforestation in the Philippines threatens both humans and ecosystems, with an increasingly pressing need to save the last intact forest remnants like the Panay lowland rainforest as a genetic resource for reforestation.

The Field Conservation and Research Division of the North of England Zoological Society (Chester Zoo) is seeking a Conservation Researcher to join its team to assist in the administration, coordination and development of field conservation programmes.


This role involves:

• Research: assistance with the development and coordination of research projects, data collection and/or coordination of data collection, data entry and statistical analysis.
• Project management assistance (with an emphasis on developing new, or promoting existing, trade related initiatives and support for the Assam Haathi Project): assistance with general project administration tasks, including reporting-writing, preparation of grant applications, background research and the coordination of sub-initiatives, as well as participation in project meetings.
• Writing: assisting with scientific papers, articles, press releases, project reports and any other related writing that as required
• Travel and field work: several short trips overseas and/or within the UK may be required.

Candidates should have completed a Masters degree in conservation science or a closely related subject, have excellent subject background knowledge of conservation topics. Specific knowledge and/or experience of the issue of species conservation, wildlife trade, or human-wildlife conflict is advantageous. The candidate should have experience from previous employment in conservation. He or she should be able to demonstrate experience of carrying out research, and have excellent English writing skills. The candidate should also be highly organized and have proven skills in researching and summarizing information and drafting scientific reports or papers. Preferred additional skills and experience include: field travel experience, statistics, website maintenance, and knowledge of any other languages.


This is a full-time position (35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm), based at Chester Zoo. The salary is £15,907.50 per annum, increasing to £17,675 upon successful completion of the 6 month probationary period based on 2012 pay grade projection. The contract is initially for 11 months, with possible extension dependent on performance, budget and future strategic direction of the zoo’s conservation programmes.

Internship Opportunity at International Wildlife Consultants

Are you interested in falconry or raptors? 

Are you thinking of pursuing a career working with animals? 

International Wildlife Consultants (UK) Ltd. was established by Dr Nick Fox (author of many scientific articles on raptors and best known for his book Understanding the Bird of Prey) and is one of the oldest established falcon breeding facilities in Europe; having bred falcons since 1975 and exporting to the Middle East since 1987. IWC (UK) was the first falcon facility in the UK to qualify as a CITES registered breeder and every year we breed over 200 falcons at our facility in Wales.  IWC also undertakes research and conservation programmes in many countries (see http://www.falcons.co.uk/). 

During the breeding season we offer a number of seasonal aviculture internship opportunities.  This is a unique chance to participate in and get experience in falcon breeding and captive falcon management. These internships at International Wildlife Consultants are available from April to September every year. 

 

During the internship you will gain valuable experience working as part of the avicultural team, under the supervision of raptor aviculturalist Diana Durman-Walters and falcon veterinarian Dr. Tom Bailey.  From April onwards we are hatching and rearing chicks, from mid-June onwards young birds are being placed in hack pens and from mid-July onwards birds are being caught form the pens, examined and exported to overseas clients.    

 

Activities that interns are involved with include: food preparation; feeding young falcon chicks; catching and handling birds being moved between pens; maintaining facility biosecurity; making and building equipment such as perches; preparing transport boxes; making falconry equipment, fitting tail guards and wing guards to falcons being exported; observing/assisting with physical and health examinations; and occasionally some farm work.   There may be some birds that need handling and manning.   We have a small veterinary facility and interns may have to help staff with on-site veterinary work.   

 

The intern will be provided with accommodation and an allowance to cover food costs.  Travel arrangements and health insurance are the responsibility of the interns.  The IWC facility is located in the beautiful countryside of Carmarthenshire and is close to the Preseli mountains.  The internationally renowned sea bird colony on the island of Skomer and the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park is close by for interns with a taste for adventure.  The requirements for an internship are:  

Good English.

Background knowledge of falconry.

Ability to work hard and to do physically demanding work.

Competence working with and around animals.

Independence. 

 Training: 

This internship not only offers you the opportunity to gain practical avicultural and raptor management skills, interns spending a minimum of 3 months at our facility will receive a complimentary complete set of the Bird of Prey Management Series DVDs (see: http://www.falcons.co.uk/shop/index.asp) and will be enrolled and assessed on the Lantra Falconry award (see: http://www.lantra-awards.co.uk/catalogue/falconry.aspx).
