The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) is a leading wetland conservation organisation saving wetlands for wildlife and people across the world.  We have a network of visitor centres dedicated to engaging people with wetlands and their wildlife including over 2,000 hectares of wetland habitats.
We are looking to recruit a hardworking, enthusiastic individual to manage the animal collection and grounds at WWT Martin Mere. Managing a team of four staff and volunteers, you will be responsible for implementing the animal collection plan whilst achieving annual targets of the captive breeding programme. Ensuring that the five freedoms for animal care are met and taking responsibility for the implementation of best practice rules and guidelines set out in WWT’s avicultural manual series will also form part of the role.
Other duties will include promoting public education by providing information to the visitors about the exhibited species and their natural habitats, and keeping the exhibits at a high standard of presentation.
You will also be responsible for forming part of the duty management of the site and out of hours cover. In light of this, a rent free, on-site cottage may be available with the position.
The successful candidate will be educated to GCSE standard or equivalent with previous animal husbandry in particular aviculture.   Excellent communication skills are also essential to the role and horticulture experience is desirable.

Aviculture Team Leader



Birdworld vacancy: Aviculture Team Leader

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Aviculture Team at Birdworld Bird Park and Gardens, comprising Birdworld, Underwater World and the Jenny Wren Farm, in Farnham, Surrey.

The Aviculture team is responsible for the daily care of the main bird collection, comprising close to 200 species. We are looking for an able bird keeper with proven practical skills and a hands on approach.  You will lead a team of dedicated bird keepers and work closely with other teams as well as with the curator to ensure high standards of animal care and public display are met at all times.

Required:
  • Motivated individual who can lead a team effectively and communicate well with colleagues
  • Experience of artificial incubation and hand rearing of a variety of species
  • Experience in delivery of medications (injections, oral and via food)
  • Basic skills associated with enclosure maintenance
  • Some experience in developing and maintaining planting within enclosures for both husbandry and visitor needs
  • Be comfortable in giving public keeper talks
  • Excellent written English
  • Understand the importance of good records and accurate reporting
  • Ability to help to develop team members through training and assessment of skills
  • Full clean driving license
  • Passion for Birds

Preferred:
  • Tertiary qualification in a biological science / Animal Management
  • Use of ZIMS

Falcon Aviculturalist





Job Title: Falcon Aviculturalist

Location: Wales

The Workplace: International Wildlife Consultants (UK) Ltd. is one of the oldest established falcon breeding facilities in Europe; having bred falcons since 1975 and exporting to the Middle East since 1987. IWC (UK) was the first falcon facility in the UK to qualify as a CITES registered breeder and every year we breed over 200 falcons at our facility in Wales. IWC undertakes research and conservation programmes in many countries (see www.falcons.co.uk)

The package: Salary to be negotiated based on experience.

The person: Needs practical experience of falconry and breeding birds of prey. Experience working with imprinted raptors or other birds is essential for the holder of this position. Practical skills along with being a reliable and conscientious team player are important. We are based on a farm so a driving licence is essential.

The job: During the spring and summer staff work extended hours to cover the breeding season so the holder of this position must demonstrate flexibility regarding work schedules.

Responsibilities include:
Aviculture team members contribute to routine aviculture activities within the department that includes:

Food preparation

Participation in the management and upkeep of avicultural facilities (involving substantial cleaning, some heavy maintenance work, repairs and building, vegetation management). This includes a small amount of farm work managing a small flock of sheep that are used to keep the vegetation in some parts of the aviculture facility and aviaries grazed.

Feeding of a group of breeding birds.

Management of breeding birds during the season.

Management of imprinted falcons for breeding during the season.

Participation in the incubation of falcon eggs.

Participation in the rearing of young falcons.

Participation in the preparation and shipping of falcons to clients in the UK and overseas

Some avicultural record keeping.

Some stock-keeping of avicultural equipment and supplies.

To contribute to the development and implementation of work plans to deliver IWC objectives.


In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the post holder is required to perform any other reasonable duties that may be assigned by the supervisor shown above, from time to time.


Type of person we are looking for has:


Falconry background

Strong practical skills

Aviculture experience or familiarity with zoological collections

Good organisational skills

Good communication skills

Familiar with Microsoft Office programs (preferred but not essential).
