The Physical Sciences Department at Rhode Island College consists of 5 physicists, 8 chemists, 2 earth scientists and 1 science educator and offers undergraduate degrees in both chemistry and physics. In the physics and physical sciences programs we teach a wide range of students, including traditional physics majors, physics majors with an interest in secondary education and students interested in middle school science and elementary education. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The Physics Department at UW-Stout provides service to majors and programs primarily in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Physics Department transforms students into problem solvers, critical thinkers and good communicators, who display an awareness of and ability to affect their physical environment. Physics Department research currently includes physics education, atomic and nuclear physics, materials physics, nanoscience, geoscience and neuroscience. We seek to involve students in collaborative research projects.

Topics taught in the physics department currently include: Introductory Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology, Environmental Science, Soil Mechanics, Nanoscience, Materials Science, Statics, Strengths of Materials, Neurophysics, and selected upper division courses. NOTE: This nine-month, tenure-track appointment begins in August 2014.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach physics and to participate in the teaching of non-majors science courses. Preference will be given to candidates who can also teach other areas of science and math. Other responsibilities include developing an externally-funded research program involving significant participation of undergraduate students, professional activity, and service to both the University and community. Current research areas of emphasis at JCSU include bioinformatics, biotechnology, cyber security, robotics, and renewable energy. The faculty member will be required to evaluate and use current technology in courses and to maintain a positive educational relationship with students and colleagues. Other duties include academic advising, curriculum development, and committee service and performing other duties required to meet organizational needs.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in physics or a related science with documented proof of expertise. Course development and curriculum design experience as well as evidence of a commitment to working with under-prepared students are also desirable. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach with technology. Effective collaboration and interpersonal skills are also desirable.
