Veterinary Nurse



Temporary Veterinary Nurse

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.
We have a vacancy for a Veterinary Nurse to start mid November 2013. This is a temporary role to cover maternity leave for 11 weeks, after which it will be reviewed.

The post will involve all aspects of veterinary nursing, as part of the health care team, to benefit the health and welfare of the animal collection, including assisting in diagnostic and treatment procedures and implementing preventative medicine plans.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, qualified Veterinary Nurse, registered with the RCVS.  Proven experience working in a busy environment and proficiency monitoring anaesthetics, giving treatments and dispensing medications along with other general nursing duties is required. Experience in large animal nursing or exotic species is highly desirable. Previous experience in another zoological or wildlife collection would be preferred and proven laboratory skills, in particular experience in parasitology using McMasters and direct techniques are an advantage. Certificate in or experience of Nursing of Exotic Species, along with knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection and conservation work would be desirable.

The job holder will have experience of working as part of a team and individually, have attention to detail, excellent communication skills both written and verbal, ability to manage own time effectively and be able to build strong working relationships.  The ability to be creative and think laterally would be advantageous.

The successful candidate must be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages such as Windows and Microsoft Office. They will desirably have experience with DOS computers systems such as MedARKS.

A full UK driving licence is required.

Salary is £20,913.50 per annum for a 40 hour week.

Qualified Veterinary Nurse/Technician



Animals Asia Foundation’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre requires a Qualified Veterinary Nurse/Technician

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare?  We are looking for a qualified nurse to join our veterinary team at Animals Asia’s bear rescue centre in Tam Dao National Park, Vietnam.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a motivated individual pursuing a career in wildlife care and animal welfare. The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a small, dedicated veterinary team to ensure the care of Asiatic black bears (moon bears), Malayan sun bears, and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five (5) days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.

Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work. There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members, you will have distinct areas of responsibility. You will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education. Experience in captive wildlife management or rehabilitation work is preferred and senior nursing and administrative experience is beneficial but not essential. You should be comfortable living and working in a remote environment within a small community.

Formal veterinary nursing qualifications are essential for this position. Ideally you should have between three (3) and five (5) years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation centre, zoo or specialist referral center. However, less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, and good humour and common sense are required.  Applicants must be able to commit for a minimum of two (2) years.

Description of Practice

We require a qualified listed veterinary nurse to work within the exotic department (Great Western Exotics), located within the multidisciplinary Vets Now Referral Hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire. The position (hours and days negotiable) would suit an experienced RVN with prior exotics experience, to nurse our referral and first opinion exotic case load. The hospital has an enviable clinical kit which includes; MRI and CT scanner, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, endoscopy, surgical suite, ultrasound suite, bespoke exotic wards and dedicated OOH team (we offer 24hr exotic cover).
Duties

Your duties will involve clinical nursing of our exotic patients including; monitoring of anaesthesia, radiography, medication, handling and husbandry of a wide variety of exotic in-patients (birds, reptiles and mammals) . There are day to day responsibilities for running and maintaining the exotic wards and equipment, and opportunities to cover weekday holidays and sick leave for other team members if you so wish. We offer a dynamic, supportive working environment with abundant learning opportunities and scope for further qualifications in exotics if desired.

Qualifications Required
This role requires a level of autonomy being that you may be the only VN working alongside our clinicians on any given day - thus we require a qualified, listed and experienced veterinary nurse with exotic knowledge and practical capabilities

Qualified Veterinary Nurse – Moon Bear Rescue Centre in China

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare?  We are looking for a qualified veterinary nurse to join our China Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu.
              

This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated individuals pursuing a career in wildlife care and welfare.  The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a highly skilled veterinary team to ensure the care of predominantly Asiatic black bears (moon bears) and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.


Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work.  There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members you will have distinct areas of responsibility.


You will contribute to the constantly evolving field of bear medicine and management and will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education.


Ideally you should have between three and five years work experience in veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation, zoo medicine or a specialist referral centre. However, less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential as well as excellent attention to detail, a strong work ethic, good humor and common sense are required.  Applicants must be able to commit for twoyears.


Applicants must have proficient computer skills including competency with word & excel software. Experience in captive wildlife nursing, rehabilitation or animal welfare work would be beneficial. 


You should be comfortable living and working in a small team within a semi rural setting.
