We are currently seeking a Team Leader to manage the lower vertebrate and invertebrate collection at the Zoo.
As a key member of the Zoo's Life Sciences team, the Team Leader's role is to ensure that the staff, facilities and animals associated with the this section are managed to achieve excellence. Working under the Curator of New Zealand Fauna, the primary focus of the advertised role is to oversee the Zoo's lower vertebrate (reptiles, amphibians and fish) and invertebrate collection, providing best practice husbandry, contributing to our understanding of the biology of these species and delivering attractive animal exhibits and meaningful encounters to our 700,000 annual visitors. You will also be expected to help identify, develop and deliver lower vertebrate and invertebrate conservation programs in the field.
Auckland Zoo's new $15 million New Zealand precinct - Te Wao Nui - opened in September 2011.  Te Wao Nui is a journey through six geographic zones and the flora and fauna of each.  The focus on native species provided by Te Wao Nui also catalyses many new opportunities for the zoo to contribute to the conservation of New Zealand wildlife, both directly and indirectly.  More than thirty New Zealand species are cared for by the Reptile and Invertebrate team. The R&I team is also currently responsible for the care of around twenty exotic reptile and spider species and will take an active role in developing this aspect of the collection further in line with the Zoo's masterplan.
This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in the development of the Zoo's lower vertebrate and invertebrate collection, to actively contribute to conservation both in the zoo and in the field, and to work with some of the world's most extraordinary animals such as tuatara, wetapunga, giant New Zealand land snails and the number one EDGE species, Archey's frog.

The successful candidate will have:
*      Demonstrated leadership and team building skills
      * Recognised qualifications in captive animal management and/or zoology/biology
      * A minimum of five years lower vertebrate and/or invertebrate husbandry experience
      * A track record of innovative husbandry and captive research
      * Strong management skills with emphasis on working to time and budget constraints
      * Demonstrated ability to deliver excellent customer service
      * Commitment to and understanding of the World Zoo Conservation Strategy 2005
      * Experience of project planning and management
      * Aptitude for and interest in undertaking field work

The Reptile & Invertebrate Keeper works as part of a team responsible for the daily husbandry and management of a diverse range of native reptiles, frogs, fish, and invertebrates species - including tuatara, Otago and chevron skinks, Archey's frog, long-fin eels and giant weta - as well as exotic species such as American alligators, Galapagos tortoises, Australian lizards and bird-eating spiders.

The organisation is committed to conservation in the field, as well as in the zoo, and all members of the Reptile & Invertebrate team are fortunate to regularly participate in a diverse range of field programmes in New Zealand.

A certificate in captive wild animal management or relevant tertiary qualification in biological sciences/conservation is required and a minimum of three years practical experience in a relevant animal collection is essential.
Candidates must have a comprehensive knowledge of the management and husbandry required for a range of reptile and other relevant species, demonstrate high standards and exceptional attention to detail and be ambitious and keen to learn. Good team skills are essential whilst the ability to work independently and show initiative is also crucial.

Auckland Zoo is expanding its field conservation programme, so the successful candidate will be expected to spend time working on conservation projects in the field. An interest in and aptitude for fieldwork is therefore essential and prior relevant experience would be an advantage.

Public speaking is part of every keeper's role, so we are also looking for a confident communicator who can demonstrate their passion for wildlife and inspire visitors through informal talks and animal encounters.

This is a full-time permanent role, working 40hrs per week on a 14-day roster system including weekends and public holidays. A high level of energy and physical fitness will enable you to meet the daily challenges of the role.

To meet the Zoo's operational needs, the successful candidate may occasionally be required to care for other animal taxa or undertake additional tasks at the Team Leader's and/or Curator's discretion.

A unique opportunity has arisen with the Lower Vertebrate and Invertebrate department for a part-time trainee keeper. We are looking for a recent graduate in biological sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake basic animal husbandry duties as a fundamental part of the post, but will also have opportunities to develop research ability.

Some prior experience within zoos is desirable but not essential as training will be given, however research skills are required. You will also be computer literate and have an understanding of statistical packages.

Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources. Our 140 acre zoological park in the heart of Hampshire is home to over 170 exotic and charismatic species in beautiful landscaped surroundings.

An opportunity has arisen to join our Animal department as a Team Leader of the Reptiles, Amphibians and Invertebrates section.

The role is responsible for coordinating & supervising daily operations of their team, under the direction of the Collection Manager.

The successful candidate must have an extensive knowledge and wide-ranging experience of exotic animal management, with specialist taxonomic knowledge & experience in the above field.

Excellent communication, organisational and people management skills are essential.

Candidates must hold a minimum Level 3 ANC / DMZAA or equivalent qualification in animal management or biological sciences.
