HEAD OF FIELD PROGRAMMES

Band 13 - £49,041 per annum plus benefits

Chester Zoo is one of the premier Zoos in Europe attracting over 1.4 million visitors per year.

It has a well-established Field Programmes portfolio and is renowned for its conservation work, and excellent standards of animal welfare.

The conservation activities involve strong partnerships with various organisations across the world and complement and interact with the Zoo’s ex-situ conservation activities.

We have a vacancy for Head of Field Programmes reporting into the Director General.

You will be expected to lead, develop and manage field conservation programmes and communications in line with the Zoo’s vision and mission and to achieve the Zoo’s strategic objectives and maximise conservation impact.

Principal Accountabilities are:

• To manage and administer collaborative conservation programmes and grants, including overseeing grants portfolio, review processes and database management.
• To appraise and select conservation programmes and projects and oversee their subsequent evaluation for conservation impact, using this in refining and developing the Zoo’s portfolio of conservation support.
• To ensure high-quality internal and external communication about the Zoo’s conservation activities.
• To work across divisions to ensure integration and participation in the Zoo’s field conservation portfolio.
• To play a role in the Zoo-based conservation community within zoo associations and relevant organisations such as EAZA/BIAZA/IUCN SSC.
• To help maximise the Zoo’s reputation through networking, giving presentations, representing the zoo in the media as required, and involvement in committees and other activities.
• You will manage a team of direct reports.



You will be degree qualified to MSc level in Conservation Science and have substantial experience of working in Conservation. You will be able to manage projects and have managed staff and budgets. To be successful in this role you will need to have an excellent understanding and knowledge of conservation science and of zoos.

You will have a respectable scientific background, evidenced by publication record. You will need to have managed people and be an effective people manager and motivational and sensitive leader of people from a wide range of cultures. Excellent communication skills as well as being able to work collaboratively across various teams within the zoo are essential.

Deputy Head of Section

 
Deputy Head of Section – Animal Encounters at Woburn Safari Park.
Experienced candidates are invited to apply for the post of; Deputy Head of Section.
This is a senior post supporting the Head of Section in managing the animal section within the walk-through area of Woburn Safari Park. The area includes four walkthrough enclosures (including an award winning lemur walkthrough) and numerous educational demonstration areas including birds of prey, parrots and sea lions. The post holder will be expected to effectively support the Head of Section in line managing 10 full time staff and up to 9 seasonal staff. This area of the park accounts for the majority of the visitor’s dwell-time and as a result, the successful candidate must be a balanced animal/people person.
The ideal candidate must have a proven track record of managing people, at least 5 years animal experience preferably within a Zoo/Safari Park environment, and should ideally hold a relevant animal qualification, such as a degree or the animal management diploma.
The “foot safari” of the park will be undergoing a major development in the next few years starting this year with the addition of the Meerkat, Mongoose and Porcupine exhibit in “Desert Springs” situated in the central hub of the visitor area, therefore the ideal candidate must be comfortable with a challenging and changing environment and will ideally have previous experience of planning and designing animal enclosures, as they will support the Head of Section and the team in developing this area.
This role will be an exciting one with plenty of challenges, and the successful applicant will be working within an area where there is plenty of room for development opportunities and career progression within the section and across the park.

Colchester Zoo has a vacancy for Deputy Head of our Elephant section. Colchester Zoo has been involved with artificial insemination projects with its elephants and has had positive results from both assisted reproduction and natural conception. This is a continuing effort as part of the African elephant EEP.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years proven experience working in both free contact and protected contact environments in a mixed herd situation and have achieved the ANC in the management of zoo animals or an equivalent qualification. The candidate should be familiar with all aspects of animal management and have a thorough understanding of animal husbandry training, using positive reinforcement techniques; have staff supervisory experience, being able to develop and support staff as needed; demonstrate competence in a demanding workplace and have good communication and reporting skills.

The successful applicant will be required to provide daily elephant encounters and educational demonstrations to the zoo guests so should have a friendly and outgoing personality and be able to engage confidently with guests on both a one to one basis and to a large audience. DEPUTY HEAD OF ANIMAL DISPLAYS


Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit an experienced Deputy Head of Section to join their Animal Displays Team. With new developments and species planned over the next year, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in completely re-developing the current Animal displays, and training some exciting new additions to the collection.

The post requires the successful applicant to train and care for a wide range of species including Macaws, Quaker Parakeets, Conures, Turaco, Iguana, Skunk, Coati and Lemurs. They will be expected to take part in the daily educational Animal presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of animals. As a Deputy Head of Section the applicant will be responsible for supervising staff in the absence of the Head of Section and assisting the Head in maintaining working and husbandry standards. The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working a variety of species, as well as previous experience managing and supervising staff. The ability to take part in public presentations is essential as well as excellent animal husbandry skills and high standards of animal care. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable but candidates with previous training experience with other animals will be considered.

Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.
