Loyola University Chicago (LUC), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track position in physics at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2014. The physics department consists of seven tenure-track/tenured faculty members and six full-time Lecturers. The faculty has active research programs in the areas of astrophysics, biophysics, cosmology, general relativity, gender and science anxiety, granular media, musical acoustics, experimental and theoretical high-energy physics, and quantum mechanics. The department offers B.S. degrees in Physics, Theoretical Physics/Applied Mathematics, Physics/Computer Science, and Biophysics, as well as a dual B.S./M.Ed. degree. The department has partnered with several engineering schools in the implementation of dual degree physics/engineering programs. With more than 100 majors, LUC/CAS has one of the largest undergraduate physics programs among all BS-degree granting departments in the nation. Responsibilities for the position include teaching courses throughout the undergraduate physics curriculum for both physics majors and non-majors, conducting an ongoing research program in physics, and performing service for the department, college, and university as required. Candidates whose scholarship is in the area of experimental biophysics are highly desirable; however, qualified candidates in other areas of expertise will also be considered. The successful candidate must have earned a doctorate in physics or a closely related discipline prior to the fall of 2014, and is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program involving undergraduate students. Post-doctoral training and demonstrated teaching experience are required. Candidates for the position should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education. | |
