GRINNELL COLLEGE. Tenure-track position in the Department of Physics, starting Fall 2014. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Associate Professor possible. A Ph.D. in physics or a closely-related field completed by the start of the position is required. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The physics department has seven faculty members with active research programs; for more information see http://www.grinnell.edu/academic/physics. The department graduates on average 15 physics majors per year, nearly one-half of whom are women or under-represented minorities. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The teaching schedule of five courses over two semesters will include courses at all levels of a rigorous undergraduate curriculum, with labs counting as half a course; every few years one course will be Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic of the instructor's choice).
In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate, liberal-arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They also should discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by October 12, 2013.
Please submit applications online by visiting our application website at https://jobs.grinnell.edu. Candidates will need to upload a letter of application, curriculum vitae, transcripts (copies are acceptable), statement of teaching philosophy, statement of research interests/achievement, and provide email addresses for three references. Be certain to submit your application well in advance of the deadline to ensure that your letters arrive by the October 12 closing date. Questions about this search should be directed to the search chair, Professor Paul Tjossem at [PhysicsSearch@grinnell.edu] or 641-269-3172 .
