DIRECTOR OF COLLECTIONS-LIFE SCIENCES

The Director of Collections performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife, conservation and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Director of Collections is responsible for the organization’s Zoological Collection; oversees long‑range plans affecting the collection in support of the organization’s exhibition, education, and conservation purposes. This position reports to the Chief Life Sciences Officer (CLSO).



  • Ensures proper animal welfare for the organization’s collection
  • Ensures guidelines for each species are followed properly
  • Recommends and develop policy and procedure improvements for animal care and welfare
  • Develops and implements the organization’s long‑range zoological collection plans
  • Leads collection master plan with curatorial staff
  • Coordinates operational activities between Zoo’s and Safari Park’s different collection issues
  • Participates in developing exhibit priorities and design
  • Coordinates major planning activities across departments with Zoo and Safari Park management
  • Consults with curatorial, animal care, scientific, and veterinary staff regarding collection management
  • Directs management of short‑term collection plans within parameters of the organization’s long‑range plans
  • Oversees curatorial staff with importation and exportation priorities of collection
  • Oversees the collection inventory
  • Oversees record keeping
  • Ensures compliance with SDZG, AZA, and WAZA species management plans
  • Represents the organization in a wide variety of national and international settings
  • Participates in development and review of animal management policies
  • Develops, administers and monitors assigned budgets
  • Recommends significant capital expenditures and facility planning for the collection
  • Responds to information needs of the CLSO, Executive staff and the Board of Trustees
  • Provides complex interpretation of collection policies and procedures
  • Identifies legal issues and recommends changes to organization policy to CLSO
  • Participates in team building and assures effective organizational communication
  • Assures collection operations comply with professional standards and state, federal and international governmental regulations
  • Monitors and analyzes related legislation and regulations for the organization
  • Provides interpretation of the collection through various media in collaboration with appropriate public relations staff
  •   Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests, and effectively coordinates activities

This position requires extensive working experience with mammal care and management. An example of experience would be a minimum of fifteen years. Experience with mammal protected contact management, operant training and conditioning is required. Selected candidate must also have experience managing animal care personnel. An example of experience would be at least seven years. Research experience reflecting working knowledge of the IACUC process and requirements are necessary. Substantial working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act requirements is essential. A valid California driver lisence is required.

The Associate Curator of Elephants is responsible for proper development, management and maintenance of the elephant collection at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park and other locations maintaining San Diego Zoo Global elephants.

This position reports to the Director of Collections Husbandry Science.
