The Zooniverse team in the Department of Physics at The University of Oxford is seeking a data scientist/Hadoopist with significant experience of designing and implementing ‘big data’ analysis systems. Responsible for leading the design of systems to support data analysis strategies for complex information environments, you will be working with data collected from citizen science projects on the Zooniverse.org platform. This role requires significant experience with the Hadoop stack (MapReduce, Pig, Hive etc.) in production environments.
You will be working in a team of 10, and collaborating with a remote team in Chicago, USA. We aim to use some of the best technology around and to provide cutting-edge tools to scientists using our platform. Big data analytics is something relatively new to the Zooniverse and so you’ll have an opportunity to design the optimal system for our requirements. Ultimately your role is to help scientists derive more research value from the datasets we collect and to improve the efficiency and intelligence of the Zooniverse platform. Travel is available if you want it, and to work in areas across research, including zoology, astronomy, medicine and the humanities.
The post is for 2 years is based in the Beecroft Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (BIPAC) in the Department of Physics.
