Save the Children’s origins lie in emergency response, and this has remained central to their work ever since. Save the Children's approach integrates emergency and development work, through the medium of the country programmes. With the increasing frequency and severity of emergencies world-wide the organisation is increasing its capacity to support programmes in both sudden onset and chronic emergency situations.
Save the Children's Emergency Response Personnel (ERP) plays a key part with the humanitarian strategy. Members of the ERP scheme are active members of Save the Children’s UK’s humanitarian department, and contribute to organisational learning and help build organisation capacity to respond effectively to emergencies world-wide.
About the role
The ERP Safety and Security Adviser will work closely with both Country Directors and SCI Regional Security Directors (RSDs) to carry out safety and security assessments, make recommendations and provide support for their implementation by country programmes.
The ERP Safety and Security Adviser will facilitate the implementation of Save the Children’s Safety and Security Policy and Standards within country programmes and help drive systemic change in the quality of safety and security management while contributing to building country compliance with safety and security Minimum Standards.
While on assignment the ERP will play a key role in the capacity building of Safety & Security Focal Points.
Emergency Response Personnel are usually deployed for medium-term assignments for:
An emergency response where Save the Children is scaling up and need immediate emergency expertise.
Surge capacity to a country programme by either filling a vacant position and/or adding further skills and experience to country programmes.
Capacity building of individuals and/or country programmes, and training delivery if required.
About you
You will be an expert in current safety and security practices and issues affecting aid work globally. You are working or have previously worked as an NGO Security Adviser or similar. Having worked in hostile environments you have developed a highly proactive attitude with the ability to work autonomously in highly stressful and challenging contexts. You can competently undertake security risk assessments and have the ability to train multi-national staff of varying technical capacities.
