The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region. The position is located in the Security and Safety Section, ESCAP.

Under the overall command of the Chief of Security and Safety Section in Bangkok, the Security Sergeant is required to perform armed security functions and reports directly to the Security Lieutenant or supervising officer.


ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Security Sergeant will be responsible for the following duties:
• Conducts daily briefings and assign officers to various functions or posts.

• Supervises staff and carries out inspections to ensure that officers on duty are discharging their functions appropriately.

• Examines routine reports prepared by subordinates and certify their accuracy.

• Makes recommendations to the supervising officer on operational matters.

• Briefs officers under command of possible security threats and related operational plans.

• Assumes control of specific areas as assigned during periods of heightened security.

• Counsels, coaches and mentors officers under command.

• Provides input for the performance evaluation of security personnel under command.

• Prepares written reports of all unusual incidents.

• Makes recommendations on basic security operation.

• Performs all other related duties as required.




Others:
Normally the incumbent will be required to perform duties in UN Security uniform and, at times, in civilian clothes. Candidate must be physically and mentally fit. Duties may require long periods of standing. The officer is required to obtain and maintain appropriate host country licenses, including, but not limited to, pistol and vehicle operator licenses. Officers are also required to undergo firearms drills and maintain UN qualification standards. Incumbents may be required to work shifts/weekends/overnights/holidays.

EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent. Additional security or military training is required. Must have passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).

Work Experience
At least five years of experience is required in security operations (which includes investigation, physical security, personal protection, operational planning, fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical and hazardous material response, video imaging badge systems and methods of instruction or related area).
Relevant IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office is required.

Experience in the UN Secretariat is highly desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage


Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of the ESCAP office, irrespective of nationality and length of time the candidate may have been in the country. If no suitable candidate is identified, overseas candidates will be considered subject to a passing grade on the relevant entry-level examinations at the duty station. The candidate is responsible for any expenses incurred in order to take examination and, in the event of an employment offer, any costs relating to travel and relocation to the duty station.

Passing the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent recognised locally-administered test at a United Nations Office is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat
