General Info: The Department of Physics at University of Central Florida (UCF) invites
experienced high school physics teachers to apply for a Physics Teacher in Residence (TIR)
position for the 2013-14 academic year. The Department seeks outstanding teachers to serve
as local experts in our Physics Teacher Education Program. Teachers in closely related fields,
including middle school physical science, will also be considered.
The Department of Physics has 39 full-time faculty members and approximately 200 students in
our multi-track baccalaureate program. We also have over 100 graduate students, many of whom
serve as graduate teaching assistants. For additional information about the department, please
visit http://physics.cos.ucf.edu/ . Funding for this position will come partially from a PhysTEC
(Physics Teacher Education Coalition http://www.phystec.org/ ) grant.
Duties and Responsibilities: The TIR will bring a unique perspective and serve an integral role
as a voice of real world experience for the PhysTEC funded program to support the education of
future high school physics teachers. The TIR may co-instruct a Physics Pedagogy course, teach
introductory physics courses, mentor pre-service teachers and undergraduate learning assistants
and serve as liaison with the College of Education. The College of Education has over 200
faculty members, with four science educators who have earned degrees in the sciences. For more
information about the college, please visit http://education.ucf.edu/index.cfm.
This position is a chance to recruit, inspire and train the next generation of teachers while
reconnecting with inquiry-driven physics teaching. Additional opportunities exist based on the
applicant's interests. Ideal candidates include both current teachers and teachers in transition
between jobs. We encourage current teachers to contact us to discuss ways to coordinate logistics
with their school district and plan for the teacher's temporary leave. The TIR position is a 9-
month full-time, non-tenure track faculty position for the 2013-14 academic year.
