The Physics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer/Sr. Lecturer position (one-year appointment beginning September 2013 with the possibility of a one-year renewal). Appointments will be made in line with experience at the levels of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. This position supports the Physics Department’s introductory undergraduate teaching program. It requires demonstrated ability and success in teaching introductory physics courses in a student centered and interactive environment. The position also supports the vision of using technology to improve the effectiveness of physics instruction, building on the Department’s tradition of innovation in undergraduate education. This will include developing material for our introductory courses, as well as integrating that material into Physics Department residential courses using emerging online technologies, especially the edX platform. In addition, the position will support Physics faculty in offering online materials and courses outside of MIT on edX.
REQUIREMENTS: a Ph.D. in physics, science education, or a related field. Operational knowledge of STEM or physics education research, with emphasis on implementing best practices in the classroom (especially in using interactive techniques and using technology effectively), and using data to improve instruction. Postdoctoral or graduate research experience in related topics is highly desired. Must have experience in educational content creation and management. Knowledge of standard web coding languages (HTML and XML) and other web-based technologies; and experience with user interface trends and web design best practices. Must have experience working with and managing teams of students and faculty.
Applicants should submit (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/2621) a curriculum vitae, publications list, teaching statement, and complete contact information for at least three references.
Additional information about the student centered TEAL (Technology-Enhanced Active Learning) format and edX is available at http://web.mit.edu/edtech/casestudies/teal.html and https://www.edx.org/.
