Animal Director Assistant Internship

Animal Director Assistant Internship (unpaid)

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, a charity committed to active conservation on an international level through protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction by captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. The Park is set in over 100 acres of sweeping countryside which includes the multi award winning Safari Experience which gives the opportunity for visitors to see giraffe, black rhino, elephant, cheetah, zebra and many more wild animals roaming free.
Together with our sister park Howletts, we have the largest collection of gorillas in the world and run two overseas gorilla reintroduction projects in protected West African National Parks. This year we plan to return a family group of 11 gorillas to Gabon. We have just released our first primates into protected areas of Java and returned critically endangered black rhino back to protected areas of their former range. We also manage a number of projects in Madagascar for lemurs.
An extremely exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for an intern to shadow and assist the Park’s Animal Director, enabling you to learn about the general operation of the Park and experience working with various animal sections. If you have a genuine interest in wildlife conservation, are aiming for a career in the zoo world and therefore looking for an introduction to both keeping and management, this is the ideal opportunity for you.
The successful applicant needs to show enthusiasm, have the capacity for physical work, good administrative skills; as you will be involved with the financial and administrative records of the animal department, and preferably hold a relevant degree or previous animal husbandry experience. A valid driving licence would also be advantageous.
The hours of work are negotiable, but it is envisaged that you will need to be willing to commit to at least 20 hours a week for a period of six to twelve months. Unfortunately we are unable to provide accommodation with this internship.
