Staff Research Scientist (UV laser technology | optical alignment | Designs | Research) (#108200)

Job Title: Staff Research Scientist
Location:  Milpitas, CA
Duration: Fulltime

Job Description:
This Staff Engineer will be responsible for developing high stability deep UV lasers for KLA-Tencor’s inspection tools. He/she will propose new laser designs and research the technology needed for those lasers. Then he/she will build prototypes, thoroughly characterize those prototypes in the lab and then use those results to improve the design. He/she will work with KLA-Tencor’s manufacturing organization and outside vendors to transfer the technology into production.

To be successful, this Engineer must make decisions based on simulations and quantitative data analysis. Careful experimentation is required to ensure that the results are correct. This Engineer must be able to work without close supervision, complete the projects and write up the results. This Engineer must be able to develop innovative solutions to challenging technical problems.

Candidates for this position must have a strong background in UV lasers and be thorough in laboratory work. They should have experience building lasers using non-linear crystals for frequency multiplication or frequency mixing.

This Engineer will work with leading laser, optics and crystal manufacturers to manufacture the lasers. He/she will interact with the world-class team of optical, mechanical, electrical and software engineers who develop KLA-Tencor’s market leading inspection systems.

Education and Experience:
This Staff Engineer will develop state-of-the-art, high stability, deep UV laser technology to enable KLA-Tencor’s inspection tools to keep up with the challenges of Moore’s law. He/she will propose innovative new laser designs and develop the necessary technology to make them work. He/she will prototype the lasers, will characterize those lasers in the lab and then will use those results to improve the design.

Once the technology is successfully demonstrated this Engineer will work with KLA-Tencor’s manufacturing organization and outside vendors to transfer the technology into production.

Must be experienced in designing and carrying out experiments to thoroughly and accurately characterize high-performance UV lasers. Strong optical alignment and diagnostic skills.

Must be a team player with good writing and verbal communication skills.

MS or Ph.D. in optics or equivalent field with 4 or more years of experience in laser development including using non-linear crystals to generate harmonics or mix frequencies.

Basic Qualification:
Doctorate (Academic) with at least 3 years of experience.
OR
Master's Level Degree with at least 6 years of experience.
