SAFARI RANGER
AT
CHESTER ZOO
Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Education Division and this includes educational outreach to schools and community groups within its catchments.
The work of the Safari Ranger involves visiting local schools (including Special Schools) to deliver exciting and engaging workshop sessions that will act as stand-alone units of work, or as pre-visit primers in preparation for students’ visits to the zoo. The post-holder will be expected to host some zoo visits of schools requesting a follow-up session. The post-holder will also be required to work in partnership with teachers to develop units of work that meet curriculum requirements.
Our approach to formal education is highly participatory so candidates will be expected to be outgoing and enthusiastic in their teaching style. In the school holidays the post-holder is required to extend the Safari Ranger service to selected community groups.
Applicants should have a Zoo Biology/Conservation-related degree, a good knowledge of the zoo’s animal collection and conservation work and a proven ability to communicate with a wide audience. A formal teaching qualification or equivalent experience in effective and sensitive communication within the context of working with children is essential. The post holder is required to plan visits, take bookings and deal with enquiries by phone and email.
The 35 hour week will run Monday to Friday. Holidays are to be taken to coincide with school holidays. The rate of pay for this post is £9.71 per hour. Please note that as a charitable trust, our salary scale is not based on LEA scales.
The post-holder will hold a clean driving license and be able to drive themselves to and from schools and transport teaching aids including artifacts and live animals. A zoo vehicle will be provided. This vehicle is to be left overnight and at weekends in the zoo.
This post is subject to an advanced CRB check.
