The Physics Department invites applications for a full-time laboratory instructor to teach and coordinate its undergraduate instructional laboratories. The appointment is for two years contingent upon a successful performance review at the end of the first year and carries the academic rank of lecturer (non-tenure-track). The physics laboratory instructor coteaches three weekly sections of introductory laboratory (each with 28 or fewer students) and one weekly section of intermediate physics laboratory, as well as providing instructional support (e.g., lecture demonstrations) for the department’s other courses.
Duties include a variety of tasks related to all physics instructional laboratory operations including maintaining the laboratory manuals and laboratory course websites; procurement, testing, maintenance, inventorying and purchasing instructional laboratory equipment; monitoring laboratory safety; overseeing student laboratory graders and teaching assistants; and sharing in the grading of introductory and intermediate lab reports. The successful applicant will be expected to stay knowledgeable with new trends in physics education and to update and revise laboratories and lecture demonstrations regularly.
Qualifications: a PhD or equivalent in physics or a closely related field is preferred, plus significant teaching experience. The successful candidate should have knowledge of and experience with physics laboratory techniques and equipment and Windows-based personal computers, including data acquisition and analysis methods and trouble-shooting equipment and software problems.
